Pangur Ban Posted February 11, 2015 Share #1 Â Posted February 11, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ok, so one of them is an M8, but of film Leicas I currently own an M3, M2, M5, MP and IIIa. In the past I've had an M6ttl and M7. That's eight all told. Â Which one should I get next? Â I don't really fancy an M4, though I know they have many admirers, as I don't really like the fold-out rewind tab and new wind-on lever style, which also rules out an M6 classic. Â I would love an M-A but can't quite run to one at the moment. Â I'm thinking of an early M3 - double stroke etc. Or should I consider another Barnack? Â I don't need one, but I've sufficient spare cash to get another and they do all get good use.

A miller Posted February 11, 2015 Share #4 Â Posted February 11, 2015 A most unusual thread you've started. If your an afficiado of the Leica film bodies, what's the logic of getting another M3 and skipping over an M4? The DS is marginally nice for its nostaligia but several refinements were made over the course of the evolution of the M3s which wont be incorporated in a DS. So you are saying that you are skipping over the M4 whch, other than the less Godly (although more practical) VF, has refinements over the M3 (like the film loading mechanism and color) and looking to get a second M3 that from a functionality perspective is inferior to the one you already have (assuming yours is a SS)??? I'm at a loss for how to be helpful to you...

philipus Posted February 12, 2015 Share #14 Â Posted February 12, 2015 I don't believe that it is possible to offer any advice on this question... Â Sell them all and get the M-A? Put your dislike about certain M models to the side and fill the holes in your lineup until you have every model made? Get an R of some description? And start collecting them all? Â Or just be happy with what you have and buy film. Â Philip
Peter_S Posted February 12, 2015 Share #15 Â Posted February 12, 2015 Why not out of the box and try medium format? Mamiya 7, Bessa III... Just an idea. I did not regret it (never having owned nearly as many Ms...)
Pangur Ban Posted February 12, 2015 Author Share #16  Posted February 12, 2015 Why not out of the box and try medium format? Mamiya 7, Bessa III...Just an idea. I did not regret it (never having owned nearly as many Ms...)  Er, I'd better not list all my other cameras here to avoid further raised eyebrows over my extravagant lifestyle...  Actually, I see quality film cameras as being the equivalent of putting money in savings accounts in the bank. Low interest rates and the enjoyment provided by film cameras combines to allow me to justify my little set ( I don't call it a collection as they're purely user-grade examples, that all get regularly used). If I need the cash then I can sell them relatively quickly and most are now worth more, or at least the same, as what I paid for them.  We're talking about a £500 ballpark purchase here - I'm not dropping £3k on a new M-P, or £6k on a Monochrome, let alone buying a Leica lens. I doubt my entire set cost me the same as a M240+50 summicron let alone a Monochrome + Apo-50/Noctilux.  Perhaps I should try an M4, just to bring me closer to completing the set. Antonio Russell Posted February 12, 2015 Share #17 Â Posted February 12, 2015 Perhaps if you had just got the M4 to start with you may have saved yourself a lot of money :-)
2wk Posted February 12, 2015 Share #18 Â Posted February 12, 2015 Yep it looks like you have to complete the set. M4! I think they are one of the nicest looking Leicas. Â I know you said film camera, but you could also add a mint X1 to your set. In your price range and something different. The X1 is such a nice design and the results I have seen are terrific. andym911 Posted February 12, 2015 Share #19  Posted February 12, 2015 got to be an M4 in my view......just perfect, mine is a scuffed black paint one and is my favourite...prior to that it was the M2 which I still adore  good luck  andy
iphoenix Posted February 14, 2015 Share #20 Â Posted February 14, 2015 Why not a Model A (1) or a Model C (1)? A non-rangefinder Barnack is extremely pocketable and would give you the chance to enjoy what Oskar Barnack originally created.
