mboerma Posted May 13, 2007 Share #1 Posted May 13, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just wondering, since 24mm is the widest angle available as frame lines in the viewfinder I would guess that Leica will make a 2.0 or 1.4 lens for it. I currently own and love the 24mm, but also would like to have one with a larger aperture. What do you think? Will this be one of the future new lenses? Any rumors? Advertisement Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 Hi mboerma, Take a look here Chances on a 24mm Summilux or Summicron?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
finkaudio Posted May 13, 2007 Share #2 Posted May 13, 2007 Hi, I personally cannot believe Leica would do such a lens. It would be big, expensive and only useful for a very limited number of users. I can see the other way around - more smaller, cheaper, but slower lenses like the 2.8/28. Right now, the lower end market goes to CV and Zeiss and many people are very happy with the performance. Shootist Posted May 13, 2007 Share #3 Posted May 13, 2007 Slim to None. Very BIG and VERY EXPENSIVE. Right now the 24/2.8 takes up most of the bottom right hand side of the viewfinder window and with the supplied hood attached even more of it. A f/2 24mm would cover the rangefinder patch, or almost, especially with a hood attached to it.

How about a 24mm f2 or F1.4 that is designed ONLY to cover the reduced format size of the M8? That would enable the designer to downsize the lens to something reasonable. While they're at it, the designer could include a built in IR cut filter that wouldn't suffer as much from the cyan vignetting effect inherient in wide angle designs. Rex From a business point of view, I would think that would be a bad idea. There aren't very many M8 users to begin with. How many of them want or will pay for a 24mm f2/1.4? So then how much do you have to charge for a lens in order to recoup your R&D + manufacturing costs?

There is a tremendous surge of demand for Leica lenses after the intro of the M8. Says to me their lens sales was languishing with film customers alone. So demand for their future new lenses will most likely come from M8 customers. Alan
Guest guy_mancuso Posted May 13, 2007 Share #7 Posted May 13, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I would like a 24mm F2 as one top end lens. Than build a 15 f4, 75 2.8, 90 2.8 and maybe a 35 2.8 all with a 1500 price tag each for folks to get into Leica without breaking a bank account but one more high end 24 f2 to cover the fast wide angle which is lacking with the 1.33 crop factor. I love the 28 F2 but i could use wider. If you need this kind of lens than size and weight are secondary concerns and I would be first in line for one and i think many others would also . this is the hole in the lineup. I would also love to see a 135 F2 apo with googles but that is a dream
carstenw Posted May 13, 2007 Share #8 Posted May 13, 2007 I would still like to see one or two high-end crop-camera lenses: 24/2 or 25/2, and a 65/1.4 for portraiture.
mboerma Posted May 13, 2007 Author Share #9 Posted May 13, 2007 I really hope a faster 24mm is upcomming... I like wide lenses very much but the disadvantage is always the relative slowness. Why not build one, like Rex suggests, only for the "DX" format of the M8?
