plasticman Posted January 30, 2015 Author Share #61 Posted January 30, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Why does a film photographer need to "differentiate" themselves so apparently self-consciously? I accept that there is a certain amount of tribalism that goes on with regard to film and digital but my guess is that is almost entirely an internet thing – a bit like the older, even more boring, Apple v. PC. Out in the real world nobody gives a stuff whether someone is using film or digital and I don't think many are making a song and dance about it. You're wrong Ian. As Alan so perceptively suggests, most of us are using film because it helps hitting on chicks.
Advertisement Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Hi plasticman, Take a look here The Mighty Tri-X Brand. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
AlanG Posted January 30, 2015 Share #62 Posted January 30, 2015 Okay, that's a slightly different point (though not entirely) to the one I thought you were making. However, I still can't agree with it. I don't think there are many users of black and white film who are using it because their motivation is simply to use film per se (to be different, etc.) and they find black and white easier to home brew. Seems a bit barmy to me. Why does a film photographer need to "differentiate" themselves so apparently self-consciously? I accept that there is a certain amount of tribalism that goes on with regard to film and digital but my guess is that is almost entirely an internet thing – a bit like the older, even more boring, Apple v. All I'm saying is that if you want to use film for any reason or no reason (???) and have an all analogue image that you produce on your own, then it is easier in b/w. So I think that helps keep Tri-X going. I certainly think there are valid reasons why some would want to communicate that a given image is printed on silver gelatin rather than on ink-jet. If there is any artistic or other trend to use film for whatever reasons by whatever groups, then these people must be communicating their interests, desires, and results in some manner. jip Posted February 2, 2015 Share #63 Posted February 2, 2015 To come back to the 'Hipsters' I'm young and when I got my M9 I was even younger! My friends saw me and my M9 and since it is retro looking, it made me a hipster. So much that they all wanted one until they saw it was digital and cost more than 100€. I made this and posted it on my FB wall at the time. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members!
