a truly useable 12mm would be wonderful

Im just not convinced this is it

add to that, the dangers of MF lenses, particularly in poro mirror dSLRs

I obviously agree about the virtues of/need for a 12mm lens and Yes, I also agree that this one isn't an ideal solution. Manual focusing, however, is effectively a non-issue with this lens ... even using the manual-focus 10X magnifier, I couldn't see any difference in sharpness as I swung the focus knob from one end of the scale to the other ... if you're shooting at F11 and your subject is at least 3 ft/1m away, then it will be in focus no matter where the knob is set!

Why didn't you use the LC1 as adigital back just hoik the lens off

It won't work for any number of reasons, not the least of which is the sensor size is so small that even the shortest focal length lens I can mount on a view camera (24mm) would have a FOV 10 percent narrower than the original lens at its far end.

The L1/D3 was unique in its ability to be adapted to this purpose, especially given its relatively modest cost, which is why I took the gamble and bought one. The new Canon whatever that's just been released now incorporates many of the features that made the L1/D3 suitable for this and it has a larger sensor to boot, but its longer flange-to-focal plane distance (~6mm longer than the L1/D3) will make finding a suitable lens difficult at the wider-angle end which I prefer (210mm on an 8x10 cropped to 8x8 works out to approx. 30mm on 35mm and 15mm on an L1/D3) and, frankly, its size turns me off as well.

I'm still going to look into it, though, as the additional resolution and larger LCD are big positives for my purposes, even if its circa US 4000-dollar price tag isn't...

stnami, Dugby - I think Jeffrey said it in the earlier thread with words to the effect that the 11-22 would be the more practical choice - especially given the dearth of F mount 12mms. Contax seems to go no lower than 15mm and Rokkor 17mm unless you want fish-eye, which I don't.

Keep in mind also that you'll be very lucky to buy either the Contax 15mm or Rokkor 17mm for what I paid for the VC 12mm and 15mm combined! (Well, the Rokkor maybe, but surely not the Contax ... also, word on the street is that the 15mm Contax is not in the same league as the 21mm Contax, so you pays your money, etc.)

Although I suppose the decision to buy something other than the Olympus 4/3 zooms is effectively a vote of no confidence for the 4/3format, the fact is that if (when!) I move on from my L1 (and I will someday), the VC lenses can go with me to my next camera, which is not the case with either the 7-14 or 11-22 zooms. Given my view-camera roots, shooting with fixed primes isn't a problem for me and given my architectural emphasis, the geometric distortions that come with most zooms (even good ones, such as the 7-14!) is something I can do without, thank you.
