older HP inkjet printer and OS X Yosemite

  • Have an old HP Deskjet 5550 for day-to-day use
  • Have been using HPIJS drivers because HP no longer support this printer and IIRC Gutenprint drivers didn't work
  • With change to OS X Yosemite, printer no longer works, gives error " 'Filter' failed "

I understand that Apple implemented Linux 'cups' with Yosemite. I don't know what that means, but think it might indicate that the drivers would function if moved to a new location.

Any help getting the printer to work would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Jeff--

Your sleuthing skills are better than mine!

The solution you found solved my problem.

Many thanks!

That's good! My old HP inkjet 930c is till in fine fettle but the last time I upgraded the OS I found I could no longer access supply levels info . At least the Mac still recognises the printer, albeit 15+ years old.

You're right, the HPIJS drivers don't fetch supply levels, but with the original drivers, the indicated ink levels for the 5550 regularly dropped to 0% well before the ink actually ran out anyway.

I've got a newer HP all-in-one which can run out of ink while still showing 1/3 full.

Enjoy the 930c! Solid machine!
