Self Calibration??? Do it or not?

Here is the case.

Actually my 75mm at 1.4 is focus shift to the front, in a focusing ring is just a lttle bit shift to the left (about 1mm).

example is I focus my daughter 2nd from left but the most focus is the 1st girl from the right.

Using a Noctilux at 1.0 is excellent but when I put at 2.8, the focus shift a bit toward the back, but the POF still acceptable.

Using 35 cron ASPH no problem at all.

If I do a self adjustment on my M8 with my 75 lux, will it change the setting to the other lenses?

YES doing the self adjustment, IE adjusting the wheel with a allen wrench, will change the focus point for ALL lenses.

In this case should I sent my 75 lux only to Solms for lens calibration (and Coding)?

This is normal Noctlux behaviour .... the lens behaves like this by design!

How are your eye and focussing skills .......... spot on??

A lot of people here think too lightly about self-adjusting rangefinders and lenses .............. so NO i do not think it is a good idea to mess around with it unless you know exactly what you are doing and have the skills and tools... the question you are posting here is proof enough for me you should not do it yourself!

I have a similar problem. My Noctilux is off at about 7 to 10 cm at close up focusing (one to two meters) while all other lenses I have are dead on. The way I see it; I can not benefit from messing around with an Allen wrench. My advice to you is to have all your 'old' Leica lenses tagged & adjusted. According to the Leica rep here in Norway, Farnes, they do not just put on some paint on them, but change the whole bayonette and 'adjust your lense focusing to a level it never have had before'.

One here mentions that the Noctilux backfocuses 'by design' when stopped down. That can't be much. I have done some comparison tests with my Canon 1Ds II and a EF 50 mm 1,0L and such 'by design backfocusing' is hardly noticable, say for one or two stops.

When you use a hex wrench to adjust the infinity setting you will also slightly change the near focus calibration. There are two adjustments, an eccentric mount for the wheel which follows the lens cam and another eccentric at the pivot end of the arm which holds the wheel.

Adjusting the wheel cam moves both the infinity and close focus settings but keeps a constant relationship between them, ie. it's an offset to both. Adjusting the eccentric at the pivot end of the arm changes the arm length, hence the "gain" of the rangefinder. It changes the distance between the near and far focus points. You can see that changing the arm length will change the near focus calibration but also change the infinity setting slightly. Adjusting either the near or far focus points is an iterative process and involves both adjustments. People who have adjusted infinty focus with the hex wrench would have also changed the near focus calibration slightly, but in many cases it's not noticable. A special tool is needed to adjust the pivot arm eccentric otherwise you risk applying torque to the rangefinder mechanism.

jsjxyz, You may find that Leica will ask for the 75mm Summilux and M8 to both be returned to Solms for adjustment. At least that's what they told me for my Noctilux. At the moment I'm holding off sending them since I don't want to be without the camera.

That's my problem too...

To sent away my M8, just for this 75 lux just too much, whilst the other lenses (Noc and 35 cron asph) are OK.

If they can do it, for a matter of 1 week, that will be cool, but my dealer in Jakarta told me to expect for 3 months at least, due to the first shipment goes to Singapore, then they will send to Tokyo. From Tokyo goes to Solm...
