Lightroom - filter by IPTC Title

Help. I notice that my favorite DAM package (iview) does not properly support full screen previews of Leica M8 DNG. What a shame as you cannot inspect properly unless you ope in Photoshop.

 

I create collections using the IPTC title and which Iview nicely presents automatcially in the organisationsational view. Does anybody know if Lightroom has this feature or if there is a workaround rather than having to use the search function which means you have to know the title you are searching for

 

By the way does lightoom save the IPTC in the DNG file or as for other RAW formats in the XMP sidecar

I assume you are referring to iView Media Pro? If you run the files through the Adobe DNG converter and select 'full size preview' you'll be able to see them in iView. Of course you won't then be able to open them in C1, but Photoshop will be fine.

You can store the IPTC data with the photo as it exports(ie Photoshop) or you can choose to save it in a separate file(.xmp)This is chosen in the Preferences area under file managemnt, under metadata, check the "automatically write into.XMP" box

HI I have jsut done a test and if you add IPTC info to DNG it wries it to file like it does for Jpeg and Tiff. I have done this by doing the edit in Lighroom and opening the file in iview media pro.

 

Am I seeing this correct as I thought Lightrrom was only adding info to XMP file for raw formats and only writting to actual for Jpeg etc. The principle being Lightroom did not want to ammend original raw

 

Any body done the same test

That sounds right so you must NOT have that preference selected to write to a separate XMP file in the managemen preferences!

coincidence, I have been writing about Lr on my blog, and some comments have been on this very topic.

 

my investigation is that Lr will write changes into metadata for supported formats, DNG, jpeg, tiff. For other raws, like CRW, a sidecar file is created if you chose 'write xmp into file' or have the 'automatically write changes to file' checked.

 

however-I can get Bridge to recognize metadata written into M8 DNG's, however, the Finder in OSX does not yet recognize this metadata.

 

the question is, when Apple updates its raw support, will this metadata be visable to the Finder? It needs to be, as this will allow us to use other raw converters.

 

The other side of the coin is that Aperture will only export sidecar files if you choose to export the original raw, in other words, if you are getting photos out of aperture. there is a plugin called Aperture Lightbox that will offer to export just the sidecars, which provides a way to create a library that could be accessible to other DAM's.

You have it right, I did the same test a month or so ago. XMP files are not used with DNGs. I think you have to set lightroom to export/update the data to the file, otherwise it just resides in the Lightroom database.

Yes in the preferences panel.According to Kelby(Lightroom book) they are witten with the RAW file unless told to in the preferences panel as stated !

I think things may be different with DNG files. Are you shooting DNG? In my preferences, I do not have "Automatically write Changes to XMP" checked, so the DNG's are not touched unless I do an export to XMP.

 

In the case of the DNG, the XMP data is stored inside the DNG or XMP is part of the DNG specification. Either way, an update to XMP on a DNG file writes data to the DNG, not a separate XMP file. Writing to the DNG may or may not break the Leica DNG for use later in the Leica supplied DNG programs such as Capture One or Flexcolor.

 

You have to remember that 99% of the stuff written about RAW or DNG is referring to Nikon or Canon raw files or these files converted to DNG, not files shot naitively by the camera, such as Leica, Ricoh and Hasselblad do.

I am using DNG, but I see your point ! I am not writing to XMP either keeping the files untouched but as you state the xmp may well be in the native DNG and only becomes a separate file if the box is checked? Whew did I say that?

I don't think it ever becomes a separate XMP file when dealing with a DNG. I will check the update XMP file option and see what happens.

Selecting "Automatically write Changes to XMP" does nothing with the DNG files nor does it create a XMP file for the DNG. You have to manually select the export XMP data to get the DNG updated.

As an option in Lr it would be nice if you could export a sidecar instead of writing on the DNG...

 

I think both Adobe and Apple need to be scolded over this, they on the one hand take the approach that they are protecting the raw file by not writing to it, yet they do not offer the tools to ensure metadata survivability, thereby creating a closed system that is hard to futureproof.

 

There is a plugin for aperture called LightboxXMP which will allow you to export a sidecar for RAWs in aperture. Maybe someone will do this for Lr eventually.Yet I don't know if Lr has that sort of plugin architecture.
