Way Off Topic

Greetings all,

This is way off topic so don't hurt me - just sharing my enthusiasm.

Many years ago between college summer semester I ended up working at a small weekly newspaper in Rimbey Alberta Canada. I was sort of a jack of all trades - pressmen, ad sales, reporter, photographer, distribution, and of course janitor.

Upon arrival the owner publisher sent me off to shoot some serious brush fires along the Blindman River very near the town of Rimbey. The camera he handed me was a Yashica Mat - he had a Rolleiflex 2.8E but it would be a week or three before I would be allowed access to it:) It was all fun and a total learning experience.

I do remember the darkroom was in the basement of the owner/publisher and he had a large color TV in his rec room - right next door to the darkroom - watching the Chicago Democratic Convention riots in COLOR was a big deal in 1968.

Life went on! I have shot on and off with various TLR cameras. Recently I scooped a MINT Rolleiflex 2.8E and decided to take it out for a spin yesterday - it was a beautiful day here in the rain forest of Vancouver. I loaded it up with Portra 400NC - no meter save for the built-in (no battery) Rollei meter.

The results stunned me - the 2.8 80 Planar is as sharp as tack and what a fun thing to shoot with - once you get used the to idea everything is backward. The camera like our Leicas does not think for you - you are in control. I scanned a few shots with an Epson 750 Perfection flatbed. I would say the image quality is close to the M8 output. I do like the M8 captures - they are medium format quality - at least when compared to the 50 + year old Rolleiflex E.

Best. Terry.

I used to have a Rollieflex years ago. I have been watching them on Ebay for a year but have yet be the high bidder on one. I really like them and while I haven't film in quite a while. Enjoy yours!

One big part of the enjoyment is surely that Rolleiflexes, together with the Leica M cameras (so now we're back on topic) may be the most ergonomic cameras ever. Everything falls directly to hand and eye, everything is just right. Add to that the sensual feeling of mechanical quality. The end result is as obscene as Edward Weston's famous pepper fruit picture that the police arrested ...
