DNG's JPG vs In-camera JPG

Whatever you do, please bear in mind that there is a big difference between what is a faithful reproduction of what you saw when you took the photograph, and you think you remember seeing ..... and what you like .....

 

...... and there is a huge element of habituation ..... you just get used to a certain look and colour profile and then regard it as 'normal'........

 

If you just used DNG's with the default Abobe profile in LR with some minor tinkering for a while you would soon come to regard it as 'normal' and the old OOC JPG's would look odd in comparison.

 

I have a whole library of Nikon photos that to me now look insipid and flat in comparison to Leica images ...... and my colleagues Canon output looks garish and oversaturated to my eyes......

 

The brain and eye are easily fooled. There are whole libraries of LR presets out there if you hunt for them and want to try them ....... and then plenty of plug-ins for LR that will allow you to get ... or emulate almost any effect you want.

 

..... and what are you doing with all these images anyway ?....... unless you are a photographic genius then maybe 1 in a 100 is worth expending some effort on before posting or using as wallpaper .... and even less than that worth printing.

 

Regard DNG's as negatives and the images in LR as a contact sheet. Forget the fact that they don't ALL look exactly as you want ..... just concentrate on the few that are really good and spend some time on processing THEM.
