Leica T-flap - :(

Recommended Posts

Bought a secondhand or maybe ex demo T-flap and T-snap … boxed but no instructions … now regret purchasing.

The T-snap is an acquired skill to snap on and off quickly but got there eventually.

The T-flap should, according to the illustrations on the Leica Camera AG website ...

Leica Flap T // Accessories for Leica T // Leica T // Photography - Leica Camera AG

… fit into the gap between the T-Snap and the camera's bottom plate.

However, it does not, with a 'quick twist' ... 'click' ... 'into the T-Snap'

Attachment of the T-Flap requires part removal of the T-Snap to facilitate the T-flap being slipped into the gap … only then will the T-flap fit … before pressing the T-Snap to spring back onto the T body … but it's not easy.

The ergonomics are too awkward and procedure needs care to avoid dropping the camera whilst fitting (and removing) the accessories.

Furthermore, the T-Snap and thus the T-Flap cannot be fitted when the silicon neck strap is fitted - neck strap needs removal first.

When fitted, if need arises to change a battery - find somewhere safe to do it so that camera drops into your lap in the event it slips out of your hand.

Had I tried the accessories first, I would not not have purchased.

Anyone else experienced problems fitting the T-flap?

The Porsche pedigree persuaded me … but will never persuade me again … the accessories are an absolute ergonomic disaster. Why Leica decided to market them is beyond me … total waste of resources in the broadest sense.

Mine will be offered for disposal via Ebay but have low hopes of a sale.

Lesson learnt.

I'm lucky enough to have a leica store nearby and tried out the accessories and luckily didn't buy them. I observed the same things you did. I think the half case is nice and provides some protection while also dimming the very noticible silver body. However you must remove it with a coin or a key to charge, change batteries or get the card.

The holster seems better and is a cool design but it doesn't fit with how I use the camera. In the end, I decided that edges will just get nicked but no paint can get worn off of the silver T and there is no chance of brassing or wearing out the leather.

I haven't tried the wrist strap yet.

I bought the silicon wrist strap but personally prefer the tactility of fabric or leather. Silicon feels alien hence dislike the neck strap too but I'm trying to get used to it. Silicon straps do not fold neatly - they protest and spring back into the unfolded length - thus the silicon neck strap cannot be stowed neatly into a shoulder bag (especially if using a small bag).

I'm investigating alternatives to the silicon straps.

Dunk, am sorry to read about your negative experiences and admire your frankness in reporting your findings to the forum. But do you like the camera? I am afraid I cannot begin to become interested in the model, mainly because of the touch screen which others seem to like very much. It takes all sorts ..... and Leica is trying to cater for us all :)

The camera is superb David and suits the intended project fine … but will be enjoyed more comfortably with a different strap. I had no intention of acquiring a 'T' but my low light project is not served sufficiently well by my XV. When the secondhand 'T' became available at a very favourable price I realised it had potential for low light photography with both Leica M & R, and non-Leica fast lenses. The touch screen is a whole new experience but I soon bonded with it.

The only reason I bought the T-Snap and T-Flap was to give the camera some protection when stored - but the not so quick to attach/detach accessories proved to be too awkward and unergonomic - and thus too frustrating in use.

Best wishes

I so agree about the accessories. They are an ergonomic disaster though I think it was Audi not Porsche who should be tarred with that particular brush.

The problems start with the springy neck strap and get worse. So far, my investment in this thing is limited to the body, the viewfinder and the M lens adapter and I'm definitely not hooked. I toyed with the idea of getting an AF lens but just couldn't bring myself to do it.

The choice of colours is bizarre as well - yellow and orange, why have two hues so close together?

Maike Harberts is pretty smart but she's definitely lost the plot letting this lot of junk through (assuming of course it was her say as product manager).

And Leica dealers may have cause to be unhappy with the wasted shelf space the accessories occupy.

Yes … apologies to Porsche Design … it's an Audi Design product.

I can understand your viewpoint and in most cases I would agree with you but I will defend the silicon strap in a few ways.

1) it is narrow unlike most SLR straps. Yes the camera is smaller and lighter and so this doesn't create comfort problems as it would on a bigger camera but even my m43 gear has a relatively big strap.

2) it doesn't slide around my body when I'm riding my bike - I have no other strap that is as secure in that way.

3) it comes on and off very quickly and easily and is very secure on the camera. Other cameras need things like those pinch quick releases insecure or buckles slow to remove. Peak Design has their anchor links but they are big and really made for the big SLR crowd.

So I think Leica came up with a default strap that optimized for different variables than you and the vast majority of people seem to prefer. (I may be the only one that likes the silicone strap on this forum.) So the aftermarket leather strap business goes Luigi on eBay. :-)

I do agree that the snap cases need a do over and even the leather half case could be better engineered.
