50mm ASPH Lux Needs Special Coding Procedure?

On Tuesday my wife took my 35mm and 50mm ASPH Lux lenses to Leica's service center in Tokyo for coding. The 35mm lens will be ready in two weeks, but it seems that the 50mm lens needs to be sent to Germany. The turnaround time quoted by the service center was three months.

Does anyone have any thoughts about why the 50mm ASPH Summilux requires the coding work to be done in Germany? My wife, who is Japanese, thinks that three months is outrageous in terms of customer support for new M8 users.

I had my 50 ASPH Lux (LHSA model) coded at Leica USA in New Jersey recently and it took about 3 weeks. I'm sure it wasn't sent to Germany because the last time I had a lens repaired (the Tri-Elmar) that needed to be sent to Germany I had to call them and actually approve the transfer to Solms.

This 3 month turn-around sounds very odd.

Bill,

I was in the Ginza Leica shop a few weeks ago and went upstairs to the repair department and talked to the technician. He showed me the list of lenses that can be coded in Japan at the repair department and noted that some (like the 50 Lux Asph) had to go to Solms for coding because Tokyo didn't have the equipment to adjust the lens after the coding was done. Of course, the Japanese service seems impressive to me because all lenses in Hong Kong and China have to be sent to Solms - a visit that in my case took 9 weeks. So two weeks as a turn around seems quite wonderful! :-)

Cheers

Howard.
