M8 honeymooner

This is my first post on this forum, so hello everyone. Some of you I already know from the Alternative FM forum and some even from the now defunct R. Galbraith forums. As an old Leica M user ( bought my first M camera, the then current M-4 and 50 mm Summicron back in 1974. Both of which I still have.) I have followed the discussions here with great interest. The main reason I haven't posted yet is sitting on the fence re. the M8. All the issues the early adopters had with the camera didn't excatly make the decision easier. Lately I have had the impression that most of the initial problems have been ironed out and the camera is now reasonably reliable. So I have taken the plunge.

Not that I need yet another camera, having the DMR , 1Ds-II and even a 400D I'm well covered, but the M Leica is of course a completely different concept. The M cameras used to be small, unobtrusive and quiet, ideal for shooting people, street- and night photography. These are fields where I haven't done much for years, but am slowly coming back to.

As I have only had the M8 for one day, I will only say that it looks fine, works as it should and initial tests indicate that my old lenses focus correctly but there might be an issue with infinity focus with some of them.

More to come.

Arne so glad you are here and welcome to LUF. Look forward to your presence and seeing your great images again. Questions, Arne ask away we actually have answers. LOL

Hello Arne!

Perhaps we should start an Alternative Image thread here ;)

You should test infinity on something very very far away, like a church spire several (>5) kilometres away. The lenses are so sharp that even my 35/2A can see the difference between 3 and 5 kilometres at infinity. Don't take the bang-on-ness of wider lenses too seriously, but focus on the longer focal lengths. Are the long lenses all the same wrt. infinity? If so, and they are not on, get yourself a 2mm Allen key and you can tune it easily enough.

If with a perfect infinity you have problems close up, wide open, then the camera needs more serious tuning to the focusing.

Many thanks for the kind welcomes, it's nice to be among friends :)

I'll be travelling with the M8 for the next week or so, should be a good opportunity to get the feel of the camera. Questions and comments will follow.

One comment I can make already, it is quieter than I expected. Having read some posts here and seen the noise test in the Chasseur d'Images where it was measured to be at the same level as the Nikon D2x, I was prepared for the worst. But my copy at least makes a low-frequency rather muffled sound, quite different from the sharper high-pitched DSLR-sound. Obviously noisier than the film Leicas, but about on the same subjective level as my 400D, IMO a *very* quiet DSLR, but with a quite different sonic signature.

Another thing I've noted is the tight fit of the bayonet mount. It really takes force to click a lens into place, whereas my M3-4-6 all are buttery smooth. Besides, the outermost rim of the mount is already showing wear after less than a hundred lens changes. Anyone else noticed this? On a (perhaps) related theme: A quick test indicates that at least some of my lenses don't quite reach infinity when focused to the stop. I can see that subjects some 100 m away are slightly sharper than those further out. Wonder if the mount needs a certain breaking in (or rather wearing down) for the lenses to focus to true infinity. Seems a bit odd. Any thoughts?

Velkommen Arne, hyggelig og se flere norske M8 brukere her :-)

Du kommer til og bli veldig glad i din M8, det har i hvertfall jeg, og

jeg kommer fra nogenlunde samme utstyr bakgrunn som deg, 1Ds MKII, DMR, D2Xs osv...

The mount is tight to start with, but that soon settles down. I don't think it changes infinity though. The infinity thing is most often a slight error in the adjustment. Leica apparently uses a jig to adjust it, and the jig doesn't always seem to agree with true infinity. Mine also did not reach infinity, but it is easy enough to adjust that particular setting.

Do all your long lenses not reach infinity?
