First, the build quality. I never held a Leica M, just the X1 I had. Wow! wow. wow. The build quality is no joke. Feels dense. Like a brick. Did I say wow?

I purchased an Elmarit 29mm V3 and that came today too. Like Christmas!

The colors. PERFECT. The DNG files I am pulling out of this camera are spot on. Muted, but accurate. My Nikons lean towards a greenish hue.

The sharpness. Lens quality is a big factor, but I am pleased. Adding some "clarity" in LR really twists these DNG pixels around nicely.

ISO. LOL. What ISO? Seriously. (I am comparing this to a D3 I use to shoot weddings so I have to really keep an open mind here) 1250 is terrible out of camera. But, the key to the M8 it seems is shoot RAW and work on your favorite shots in post. I can certainly clean an ISO 1250 image up pretty well in LR. Oh well. The LCD on the M8 does make the images look way worse than after import, that's for sure.

I created a couple of Lightroom presets tonight to add ~25% RAW noise reduction and auto WB. This cleans ISO 1250 up and gives me a good WB. Added a few little tweaks I like and enabled lens correction. 1-click and the image is done.

I need to play with the M8 over the next few weeks, but I can see its strengths already. The M8 does not give you ready-made photos like a P&S. It is a super sharp low ISO CCD machine (like med format) that will deliver stunning digital negatives in a classic Leica body.

This camera will teach me how to shoot at ISO 640 and below. Not much different than using 200-800 ASA film. Which, oh yea, was the only option for decades!

...and the "cool" factor is worth every penny too :)

Here is a snapshot of my daughter's favorite toy/friend "Eaty." He actually has a FB page because he goes everywhere with her. lol This was with a rental voightlander 35 f/1.4 lens.

Hi,

did a quick comparison for ISO 2500 vs ISO 160 shots with my M8, so you can kind of see for yourself.

The ISO 160 and 1250 shots were pushed in post to match the brightness of the ISO2500 image.

I didn't do any noise reduction, no color noise, no luminance at all.

Also I added comparison shots using the full 14-bit data from the sensor.

I think ISO 2500 is not too bad for the old lady...

I only fear that it is not easy to estimate using the small JPGs with low compression :/

And the 100%-crops:

If someone is interested in the DNGs, let me know.

I got more interesting tests up my sleeve ;)

PS: Lens used was the 40mm Summicron-C @ 2.8 (I think)
