I am playing around with one now (40mm/1.4) and noticed that the base flange is integral with the helicoid threading ring and therefore not easily removeable for adding coding recesses and it brings up the 50mm framelines.

anyone else seen any other versions of these?

there are two versions of this lens available with the difference being the lens coating treatments

the more common has lens coatings and one model uses a less powerful coating, which I believe is favored by some ...this lens was released mainly in Japan

I have this lens & find the 50 frame lines work reasonably well ,,,I just plan for a bit more outside the frame lines, which after all are not spot on accurate for any lens at distance

...some have filed their bayonet to bring up a 35 mm frame line, but I have not felt it worth the trouble or risk ...there is information about this on the Rangefinder forum I believe

hand coding is difficult & I have not been successful with my efforts, but given the focal length of this lens, not all that important to me ...getting an ir/cut filter for it is important & I am anxiously awaiting for Leica to deliver one ...I am almost certain the nifty optional CV lens hood will not work with it, but I already have a rubber hood that should be just fine

all this said, I have been impressed with the optical quality & build of this lens ...I love the design of the aperture selector ...quirky yet effective

I have the SC(single coat) version. Heliopan, B+W and Leica filters all permit the hood a good fit--I have three lenses of E43mm--and will also add that it's a super little(!) lens with OOF just a tad on the "excited" side. Oh, and I have (not yet) seen the need to code it.

Hi John,

Can you explain a little further what you're seeing? What in the bayonet seems to be different from the bayonet on a Zeiss or Leica? I'm curious.

Cheers,

Sean

sean:

from what I have seen on Leica M and Zeiss M lenses, the bayonet flange removes by unscrewing four or five small fasteners and comes right off and will go right back on. The new 49 C/V I looked at has the four fasteners, but the inside of the flange is threaded for the moving element of the lens. Now it may simply unscrew from the hellicoid thread on the lens elelment but I don't want to take it apart and find it is a problem to properly re-assemble.

John,

I sent you a PM relative to this issue. The 50mm M mount Classic Heliar I have is like the Zeiss and Leica M mounts - just remove the 4 small screws (no locktite) and slip off the flange. Perhaps it is only the 40mm that has this unique construction. I'll be interested in seeing how the new M mount CV 25 f/4p is constructed.

Carl
