Has anyone solved the problem of IR fitration on the Tr-Elmar? The 49mm filter seems not yet to be available and in case needs to be in a special thin mount. I might get a Tri Elmar it his problem can be solved.

That's interesting Keith as a 49 was one of the two I ordered from Leica - the other was a 60 for the Nocti. Did you receive both your filters in the same delivery?

Hi Steve,

Yes, a 39 and a 49 both arrived by FedEx yesterday in the same parcel.

Hope you are well.

Alwyn:

I've been using the B&W 486 in 49mm on the Tri-Elmar for about five months now, and it seems to work great. Christian Erhardt of Leica told me that while the new Leica filters are a bit different from the 486s, the Leica ones address problems with lenses wider than 28mm, and should work fine with the normal to longer lenses. Although I shoot mostly black and white, my color work with the Tri-Elmar/486 combo looks great to me (my lens is uncoded, BTW). I know Sean Reid had confirmed this, too.

Good luck with your finding one -- I ordered mine from Adoroma, and it took about six weeks to get (earlier this year). I got a 39mm 486 from Popflash a month ago, and that only took a few days after I ordered it. In other words, I have no idea what the supplies are worldwide -- I''m sure other forum members will know more than I do.

I got my 49mm and 39mm filters today (postmarked Wetzlar!). They took about four weeks. I put the 49mm, which seems to be a standard-mount filter, on my Tri-Elmar and took some test-shots. I was told by a dealer (after I'd sent off the order) that I would need a thin filter mount on the TE to avoid cut-off at 28mm. But since I'm only using it on the M8, which gives a much reduced angle of view, I guessed that there would not be a problem. There is no problem. There is no cut-off at the corners. What would happen on a full 35mm frame I don't know, and don't need to know.

What does bother me on the TE with the filter mounted is the fact that the front surface of the filter is much more likely to pick up reflections than the recessed front element of the lens. And the lens-hood is designed for 35mm and not for the reduced LoV of the M8. We really need a set of M8 lenshoods that are "tighter" than the standard ones.

But the TE is a great lens. I was concerned that I would find its "new" focal lengths much less useful than on 35mm. This, oddly, seems not to be the case. It remains very versatile. Definitely recommended. And don't worry about the filter.
