I have an Eizo monitor which I use for photoediting and soft proofing.

 

I have recently purchased a GrafiLite Mode desk light for print comparison with the soft proof. Not too worrierd about white point comparisons (the eye adjusts anyway) but I am keen to get the luminance correct between the print and the monitor soft proof.

 

I have the Eizo calibrated to 100cd/m2,which is reasonable (dim environment,etc),

 

Trouible is that when place a print under the GrafiLite it is far too bright. I have taken readings using an external colorimeter and it reads the brightness of the print at 190 cd/m2. I am not keen on boosting the luminance of the Eizo that high as that is too bright.

 

Any ideas on how to dim the GrafiLite? Are there any dimmable compararable desklights,with good CRI,5000 K etc that would do. I am in the U.K.

 

I know I can buy a proper viewing cabinet but they are expensive and large!

The best solution, though, is the one you reject based on price; a viewing booth is a better approach, assuming one further configures display lighting to match the printing conditions. And, even then, framing under glass can change 'brightness' matching again.
