These 2'-gauge 2-8-2s were originally designed for desert conditions in South West Africa, working on the Otavi Railway. They were transferred to the Avontuur Railway in the Eastern Cape in the 1950s where they have always been known as 'Kalaharis' because of their origins. This one was hauling a special excursion at Chelsea, just outside Port Elizabeth, in 1997
