jaroopaitummai Posted October 30, 2014 Share #1 Posted October 30, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello all, I am not sure if I should post this here. I found this item on ebay: Leica MP3 | eBay (I emailed the seller and he sent me some photos. I googled the serial number and it seems that the seller is using the photos which were previously used when the same camera was auctioned a while back.) and the following post: NikonWeb.com • View topic - Kodak DCS 100 sales on Ebay.com now. Be careful to bid I think both items were from the same person as they had the same name and email. What do you guys think? I hope it is legitimate as some people are actively bidding on it. agreenspan Posted October 30, 2014 Share #2 Posted October 30, 2014 TROUBLE. Clues: 1. Ebay feedback of only 1, and that as a buyer. Never buy something expensive from a low / no feedback seller. 2. One picture of item. Really? Someone with a Leica set like this is going to post ONE picture? 3. Took time to compose a picture message for emailing of other pictures. Translation: "I don't want to post the pics publicly, because I'm up to no good." Beware.
Humood Posted October 30, 2014 Share #3 Posted October 30, 2014 My experience in buying Leica cameras on Ebay is not that great. I simply can not trust anybody even a reputable seller. I bought a silver M6 TTL and I sent it for CLA, it came back, sat on my desk for some time, but when the time came and I pulled it out for use, I discovered that the back film door's leatherette was uneven. Turned out the camera had a hard knock on the film door it must have had a dent of some sort, the dent was fixed, the door was pained, I ended up buying it, the paint started to scratch off! This is only one story. Beware.
spydrxx Posted October 30, 2014 Share #4 Posted October 30, 2014 I've bought and sold lots of Leica gear on the big auction site for over 10 years. IMHO the "buyer beware" cautionary note is equally justufied in any camera shop. The difference is that you can't tangibly inspect gear from an online purchase before committing. But given the deals I've encountered, I can only say, diligence, patience, good judgement, and knowledge are keywords to sucess. The only times I've encountered issues in online deals is last year I sold a 135 Tele-Elmar in VG condition, but it was dead winter, and the diaphragm apparently froze in transit...buyer wasn't happy, but including his own cost of a CLA he kept it instead of accepting my offer of a full refund; 2nd issue was my purchase of a Noctilux a couple of years ago at a very attractive price...it turned out that it was a sham deal in a sting operation run by a government agency (I suspected the FBI)...apparently they were trying to go after a particular person and when I accidently won the bid, they quickly returned my money and cancelled the deal. I only figured it out a few weeks later when I read a newspaper article of a similar sting operation being carried out in another jurisdiction. Like any business transaction...one must do their homework in advance if one expects to achieve success.
RITskellar Posted October 31, 2014 Share #5 Posted October 31, 2014 I totally agree with spydrxx on generally positive eBay experiences. And I've had a lot over the last 10 years! Common sense and good judgement goes a long way. I've found that one of the best things to do in any eBay or online transaction, especially those of higher value or those that you may have some concerns about, is to simply ask the seller questions. Even if you don't have any questions! You can tell an awful lot about a seller and their character by how they respond.
pico Posted October 31, 2014 Share #6 Posted October 31, 2014 It is difficult to find who copied what and when, but that same photo shows up on a Chinese informational/collectors site from June, 2012, and perhaps elsewhere.
DigitalHeMan Posted October 31, 2014 Share #7 Posted October 31, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) In these situations, where there is strong evidence that the deal is dodgy, it's best to just report the listing to eBay and let them decide whether or not to cancel it.
