Now that I'm more familiar with it, I count the luminance noise in shots taken at ISO 320 and 640 to be one of its great strengths. For example, this is a throwaway image taken at Brooklyn Bridge Banks with a Zeiss 28 at ISO 320. The two 100% crops demonstrate the nice texture up close. The luminance noise in the darker areas (pants, t shirt and black grill under the bridge) deserves some mild correction as the luminance noise pattern is soemwhat disturbing... I would teak it a bit while leaving some to preserve the contrast. Notice that there is absolutely no COLOR noise in any portion of the file. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

What's amazing is that even with a stop or two added to the mids, the luminance noise retains so much detail and adds nice grain. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
