paulsydaus Posted October 8, 2014 Share #21 Posted October 8, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) My M40 which shipped about 1.5 years ago shipped with an oil spot. Took about three wet cleans to fully remove. I did it myself, and was very nervous the first time. I've never had a problem since!

algrove Posted October 9, 2014 Share #22 Posted October 9, 2014 All my 5 Leica sensors have spots from brand new. So let me clarify the thread... Did you get a perfect sensor when buying your new Leica or does your Leica sensor have spots on the photos? Yes, on 10 various digital M.
JohnJWhite Posted October 9, 2014 Share #23 Posted October 9, 2014 Yes, that is what I noticed. But why would aperture matter? Wouldn't open aperture be more of a cure for dirt in the lens? Most particles are extremely small, and they are not actually at the plane of the sensor, but ahead of it. So if you use a wide aperture, the narrow depth of focus puts the spec of dust out of focus, since there are photons coming to focus at the sensor, but ahead of the sensor they are on the "circle of confusion", moving past the dust spec on its right, left, top, bottom, etc and then converging on the sensor. But at f:16 the photons are all coming in through the same opening and are close to parallel, so the spec of dust shows up more clearly on the image. The dust then can cast a clear shadow on the sensor, rather then a larger but diffused blur.
Paulus Posted October 26, 2014 Share #24 Posted October 26, 2014 All my 5 Leica sensors have spots from brand new. So let me clarify the thread... Did you get a perfect sensor when buying your new Leica or does your Leica sensor have spots on the photos? No spots on the M240 when I bought it. In fact no spots for about two months. That was better than with the M9. (On the M8 I don't remember when the spots came...) It had spots from the moment the shutter went down several times. Looks to me like the M240 is better in this way. My M240 stayed rather spotless for about 8 months. Then I let it clean professionally. The sensor and the camera. Now after a year it has three spots on the sensor. I wonder if they are gone, when the camera comes back from Wetzlar in a few weeks.
chris_tribble Posted October 26, 2014 Share #25 Posted October 26, 2014 Hand blower, Visible dust brush, once I had to use Eclipse. It's really not a problem.
