The details for the venues etc for the Istanbul One Challenge are in the PDF.

I have chosen the lunchtime cafe in the newer part of the city, towards Taksim Square and where there are local bazaars, according to the guide book.

The cafe is owned by a local Magnum photographer, Ara Guler so seems to me to be a good venue.

Ara Cafe

Tomtom Mahallesi

Tosbağa Sokak No:2

Galatasaray

İstanbul

12 noon.

Let me know if there are any problems with the pdf and I will edit it.

Just became aware that Turkish Authorities have stopped issuing visas at the airport, at least to Australians. (Info from Oz site).

It was not clear if this only applies to Australians, or is a new general rule. May be worth Forum members checking regarding their nationality. Obtaining the e-Visa online is quick, easy and virtually instant, if bloody expensive for Australians (US$60.70).

What a great news !

Istanbul will be more than happy to welcome the distinguished members of the forum.

Congratulations Andy,

The program is excellent. So is the choice of Ara Cafe, a very meaningful place to meet on Saturday. Dinner I am sure will also be a very nice experience.

As a late comer to the thread I will be reluctant to offer additional ideas. However I can't stop suggesting a possible inclusion of a Bosphorus trip to all visitor's private calendars. Nisantasi area may also be an additional visiting spot with a totally different alternative social profile.

Anyone who wants to take a taxi during their stay may use 'BiTaksi' a free mobile app downloadable. It may be a precaution against some unwanted taxi adventures which are rumored to be valid especially in tourist intensive areas. The only restriction with the service is it is not usable from the airport.

As a resident of Istanbul and a humble member of the forum I am ready to try to answer any questions you may have.

You are all welcome.

Andy,

Unfortunately I can not make it to Istanbul as I will be in Turkey but in another city at that time.

I have seen the rules of your challenge and I see that you also propose a Night Challenge.

For this , let me just to suggest a route which can be very interesting : after dinner, I suggest the group to walk to Sirkeci station, join the Galata bridge (night vistas of mosques and fishing people at midnight), cross the bridge and walk up the hill towards Galata tower (The genoese Tower) around which some nice wine and cheese bars will be welcome for some, including very night atmosphere for pictures.

I have done this early this year with a variant through the Suleymaniye mosque and that was very interesting.

Best time there and have a great success !

Same holds true for US passport holders and it is likewise a pricey $60. I recall reading that the Turks did this out of spite because the US, Australia and others were requiring Turkish citizens to apply for one. Seeing what enters Turkey nowadays and passes into Iraq/Syria emerging as professional beheaders, the caution seems to have been well-founded. Just returned from Istanbul and felt completely safe, though. The locals were always gracious.

I have no complaint about buying a visa, just the cost discrimination relative to say UK passport holders.

I don't think the high fee would discourage would-be assassins seeking entry to Iraq/Syria.

I agree about the safe feeling in Turkey, although it is a while since I have been there.

Andy,

will it be allowed to use the new Leica V-LUX?

It has a 25-400FF lens.

The rules if the One challenge say ONE LENS an not ONE FOCAL LENGTH

So I assume that someone can participate with the V-Lux, if I interpret the rules correctly?

Short answer is 'yes', you may use any Leica branded camera or lens, or both. If you use a zoom lens you must specify which focal length the lens will be set at. This so that you are not at a superior advantage to other competitors who have locked themselves into one focal length. This self monitored, on a trust basis.

Others may supply more detailed answers.

See you there soon.
