atanabe Posted May 5, 2007 Share #1 Posted May 5, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Are there any machinists out there with CNC machines capable of machining the six bit pattern on EXISTING mounts? Just hypothetical here, but in reality, the mount can be taken off, a jig aligned to the mount indent and the six slots can be cut into the existing mount. The code can then be colored in with paint. Bench time should be short once the program has been created. Sure would beat waiting 6 weeks for a new mount to be made in Germany for your lens. Ideas? Suggestions? rvaubel Posted May 5, 2007 Share #4 Posted May 5, 2007 light bulb goes on...jm@milich.com What you need is a padded 3 jaw chuck to hold any lens Really pretty simple. Rex Oh, and a CNC mill
jayproth Posted May 5, 2007 Share #5 Posted May 5, 2007 Ok, Good News vs Bad News time: Good News: I've got a CNC Mill. Bad News: I live in the Philippines. I've never thought about CNC'ing the mount for the sake of 6-bit encoding before though, because up till now I'm still afraid of breathing heavily on an uncapped $3,500.00 Leica lens! I'll try to look for a less-invasive solution though.
jlm Posted May 5, 2007 Share #6 Posted May 5, 2007 maybe i was too cryptic, but I've been doing a few of these already.
gravastar Posted May 5, 2007 Share #7 Posted May 5, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) maybe i was too cryptic, but I've been doing a few of these already. I would assume many lenses which Leica say can't be coded could be done this way if you were prepared to carefully remove the mount for machining? Those are the ones with a screw in the way or have a mount that is no longer available. The retaining screws are countersunk so the ends of the cutout could be milled and would act as a placement guide for painting over the screw head. Bob.
