You might hasve got hung up on the shortages of lenses round october november december when stuff was being barcoded. Maybe there are more about now.

I don't think so. I checked B&H, and they don't list it (and they list just about everything). Then I checked the Leica site and the 35 is stated to be only available in black.

I just can't fathom why they would cease production when they release the new Leica which needs this lens! And so far, no comments have been given on that point.

Given Leica's economic situation its not hard to guess that bottom line issues are involved here, not stupidity or insensitivity to the aesthetics. Potential customers with your particular aesthetic priorities may not be very high... They may have looked at the cost of a limited production of this lens v. the sales projections and decided that it didn't make any sense to continue producing the lens in silver, esp given their financial condition. They may even have done so reluctantly.

I could relate to your feelings Anthony when I bought my first silver Leica.

Both my M7 and M6 are black, therefore all my lens are black.

But it's not as bad after all.

Am I just way to picky? I want to get a new Leica (I have a great old M3 in fabulous shape.) But, I won't get a black body. I personally don't like the black Leicas. The problem is that I would absolutely have to have a 35 1.4, but they only make those in black now!

What gives? With the mult-factor on the M8, the 50 1.4 just won't cut it for me. I have to have the 35. But, there is no way I am going to spend upwards of $8k and not get a body and lens that actually look like they go together.

I have been trolling eBay for months and used ones are about impossible to find. What is Leica thinking in not offering matching lens for their new M8?

I know I'm picky, but for $8k I have the right to be, and I WILL be.

I own the 35/1.4 ASPH in chrome. Beautiful lens but very heavy, so be sure to check out if you are happy with this before you buy. Many are not.

With more compact lenses such as the 2.0/35 the added weight of the chrome lens is not felt quite that much, and unless you really need 1.4 the Summicron 2.0/35 ASPH is a very good choice and much cheaper too.

Leica stopped making a lot of the silver lenses a few years ago, when they were trying to contain costs by reducing stock they would have to warehouse etc.

Maybe we'll see their return as they make some cash off of the M8 etc.

There was discussion on this a couple of years ago I thought and some lenses werent going to be available? In between they again seemed to appear from somewhere.

If they have manufactured silver in the current range in the past then wouldnt it be more likely they dont have a production run at the moment, but will get another batch out when it suits them. Might take a while and whether that be in response to demand, marketing requirement or pricing.

I mean they are a company that does refurbishing and a la carte, so I cant see them throwing jigs and tools away. Probably just a hassle and pricey for them at the moment and they cant get to it. If silver lenses were going to make all the difference to Leicas bottom line I am sure they would get them out tomorrow.

For gosh sakes - - quit worrying about how you will look to the unwashed if you have a camera and a lens that don't "Match" in terms of color. When you're looking through the viewfinder to catch a quickie, you wont really care if the finish is black or silver - - - you'll just want the photo.

Thye 35 Lux ASPH is a wonderful piece of glass. Just spring for it and forget the desire / wish to "coordinate" the finish.

In terms of current production, silver lenses are limited to 35/2, 50/1.4, 50/2, 50/2.8, 90/4.

There used to be 21/2.8, 24/2.8, TE, 35/1.4, 90/2, 90/2.8, all now discontinued and looking at the dates, 2004 was the year they decided to trim the range, possibly as a cost-cutting measure. Remember Leica was teetering on the brink then.

Personally, I think black lenses on a chrome camera are fine, chrome lenses on a black camera less so.
