Joe Mondello Posted May 3, 2007 Share #1 Posted May 3, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I picked up the new Leica wide strap and the half case "camera protector" for the M8 from Tony Rose at Popflash (excellent service BTW, highly recommended). http://www.leica-camera.us/photography/m_system/accessories/cases_and_straps/485.html... I keep the M8 with half case and strap in the center pocket of a Billingham Small Hadley with lenses in the side pockets. One day I notice a little bright mark on top of the (black) M8 bewteen the hot shoe and shutter speed dial. Hmmm, wonder how I did that? Never mind, it's done. The other day I pull out the camera and see a 1/4 semicircular mark on the LCD screen. I go to wipe it off, but it's a scratch. A deep scratch! Now I'm puzzled and wonder if there is something in the bag, I empty it out, wonder if my jacket zipper did that, etc. . . until I notice that the inner side of the metal tab that adjusts the length is a screw head and a little bit sharp. Sure enough if I move the strap around like it might be stuffed in the bag, the mark and the screw head line up! So I put some black gaffer tape over it to protect, but I have 2 permanent marks on my camera that just didn't have to happen! So I figure I'd tell you folks just in case I could save someone else from needlessly scratching their LCD screens. Now that makes the camera officially "mine" hehe

Mark_Rinella Posted May 3, 2007 Share #2 Posted May 3, 2007 Same thing happened to me on the shutter speed dial from this strap. Good news is that with digital, since I know the camera will be obsolete in a couple of years, I am a lot less precious about it.

I used the M8 in Central Park today and the scratch was annoying -- but luckily not life threatening! ;-)
marknorton Posted May 4, 2007 Share #4 Posted May 4, 2007 That strap is bad news from beginning to end. The end of the split rings are sharp and grind away at the strap lugs which my "Anatomy" thread shows is one of the most expensive parts to replace in terms of labour. Then there are the length adjuster screws in the strap which have rough edges and will happily scratch whatever they come into contact with. I've dumped (both) of mine and gone back to the standard one which comes with the camera.
