TommyC Posted July 30, 2014 Share #1 Posted July 30, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Got my X Vario and various accessories today! Battery is still charging. I've noticed the following on the zoom lens barrel: 1. There is some play on the zoom ring. When I rotate a very small amount (e.g., 1mm) to either side, the lens barrel doesn't move. When I rotate more than 1mm, the lens barrel starts to move. 2. Whenever I room, I hear a mechanical start and stop sound. As I start rotating the zoom ring, there's a "click" sound. As I stop, there another "click" sound. Are they normal? Will the play and "click" sound go away after some usage?
Advertisement Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 Hi TommyC, Take a look here X Vario lens barrel issue. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wda Posted July 30, 2014 Share #2 Posted July 30, 2014 Not normal in my experience Tommy. Report it to the vendor.
thighslapper Posted July 30, 2014 Share #3 Posted July 30, 2014 I have two. One has a little play and some slight 'clicking' at the 70 end of the range..... on the second it is noticeable only if you look and listen for it. Both have a 'clunk' at the 50mm mark where the lens 'reverses' its zoom and again it is easy to hear on one lens and not the other. I think it is a product characteristic and just more noticeable in some zooms than others. The worst of mine has been back to Wetzlar in the last month to have a couple of eyelashes (!) removed from the sensor, so it theoretically has been thoroughly checked twice now ...... If the camera works ok and there are no focussing issues I wouldn't worry. If what you are hearing sounds very different to what I describe then discuss with the seller...... TommyC Posted July 31, 2014 Author Share #4 Posted July 31, 2014 Thank you guys. It's more of a "cluck" sound. It sounds like when parts don't fit very well together. Contacted B&H and they said to give it some time. If the sound gets worse, contact them again. I will attempt to contact Leica too.
Lee Martin Posted July 31, 2014 Share #5 Posted July 31, 2014 I'd send it back. It's going to bother you and annoy you, and you may concentrate more on the noise rather than taking pictures. They should all be the same. Be happy with your purchase, replace it
papimuzo Posted July 31, 2014 Share #6 Posted July 31, 2014 My XV zoom doesn't exhibit any noise, except a small "click" when arriving at the 28 position. Perhaps my rather great age (74) makes me already a little bit deaf? . Well, as some propose: send it back to get a silent one.
TommyC Posted August 1, 2014 Author Share #7 Posted August 1, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just dropped an email asking Leica about the issue. B&H is also working with me if I need to have a replacement. Thanks for all the help guys.
TommyC Posted August 2, 2014 Author Share #8 Posted August 2, 2014 Leica said it's not normal. I will send it back next week.
thighslapper Posted August 2, 2014 Share #9 Posted August 2, 2014 hmmmm ..... might have a moan about mine ........ it is considerably noisier than I recall before Wetzlar fiddled with it to remove the offending hairs.... and my original XV is silent by comparison despite being a lot older and having been used intensively for many months ....
