Step up ring

Can any one advise on step-up rings?

The 90mm lens I have for the M is the earlier 2.0/90mm Summicron-M made between 1958-1979. Although it's large and heavy I really like the image quality I get from it and I don't want to have to spend on getting a later model as most of the time I use a 75 lux ... However, I do want to be able to use the lens for colour work with the M8. Problem is that it takes an E48 filter, and Leica aren't supplying these. As I've now got B+W filters for the rest of my kit and Leica are able to supply a "free" 49, will a step-up ring is a solution?

I've found a supplier for a 48-49 step up ring (Stepping-Rings) so that problem is solved. The likely issue, however, is the collapsible lens hood. Will it be fouled? Looking at it I think not - it's not a very tight fit, but I'd be interested to hear anyone else's experience.

Hope you can help.

Thanks to both for such quick responses - WHAT a useful thing LUF is....

Have you contacted SRB @ Luton?

George - who are SRB?

Sean - great idea - I'd not thought of going down - should work when I think about it... but do you think that 46 (the next Leica size) is really realistic??? Other problem is that at the moment Leica are about to supply me with the 49 ...

Great to hear if anyone's actually done any of this - but in the meantime I really appreciate your responses.

George - worked it out and spoken to a very friendly person at SRB (recommend to others) they have a money-back-if it-doesn't-work policy, so I'm ordering a step-up and waiting for my 49mm filter to come from Leica (they promise next week according to an email received today). I'll post results back to the list.

Thanks again.

  • 2 weeks later...

Received the step-up ring and it works fine. I now have an IR filtered 90 Cron. The other thing that's really neat is that the screw head on the mount lines up perfectly so that the lens is recognised as a 90mm and the exif data gets written! A real bonus.

Two images attached. Hand held at 60th, fully open. Pretty sharp for a 120mm lens!

Thanks for the advice
