A Major LR Problem: HELP PLEASE.

Well, it's major for me at the moment. Any help would be immensely appreciated.

Suddenly today, with not a single thing that I can think of changing in my hardware, software or workflow, LR says it cannot read my DNG files that I'm trying to import from the memory card.

Same card that I've used for thousands of shots. So I tried other cards: same problem.

Same camera. M (240). Same settings. So I tried another camera (Vlux4), with another card: same problem.

Same computer: iMac 27".

So I tried updating LR from 5.3 to 5.5. Still the same problem.

PS can manage everything with these files, but LR can't, and I cannot think of anything to try.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Since all other operations work, the issue seems to be located in LR.

I would try the following steps - if needed:

- Create a new catalog and see what happens.

- Copy the files from the card to the system and then (try to) import into LR either by pointing to the folder or by using drag and drop on LR.

- Remove the preference file (/Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.Lightroom5.plist) - meaning: put it somewhere else with LR shut down. Then restart LR. This should get you a new preference file.

No suggestions further than that, I'm afraid.

Other than contact Adobe.

Have you tried copying the image files from the memory card to your computer first, and then importing them?

I occasionally have issues with my cards, and copying them first helps. Normally reformatting the card afterwards sorts it out for a while.

Yes, but LR still can't open them, even though PS can.

I've tried everything I can think of other than calling Adobe. As Brad says, and exercise in patience.

Have you run Disk Utility to repair permissions?

LR might fail because you no longer have permission to write to its work directory. PS works because it does not use that directory.

Repair permissions right away and my bet is that the problem goes away.

Thanks for the good and learned advice everyone.

But of course it was user error, so apologies for wasting your time.

It was something deep inside the file structure that I use which has become rather complicated, no doubt unnecessarily so, and one of the settings in one of the volumes is incompatible with DNGs (or so it seems at the moment) and I had inadvertently been trying to import files into a parallel but not identical folder to the one I customarily use.

Apologies and thanks again.

Even though your description is vague (something deep inside...), it seems highly unlikely that a volume would be incompatible with ANY conventional file. If it were so incompatible, then general failures of almost any file would occur.

Good luck.

Sorry to be vague Pico.

It's born of my ignorance I'm afraid.
