EH21 Posted May 2, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted May 2, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I have a DMR/R8 combo with the r8 having been sent to Leica to be modified to be used with the DMR. Nearly all of my lenses including the 35-70 elmarit have ROM. Seems like the aperture and shutter speeds are recorded in the EXIF always, however sometimes the focal length is and sometimes not. This is really useful information when reviewing shots or searching for shots. It also appears that sometimes this information is available and sometimes not for a single lens. For example when using lightroom, sometimes the pictures I took with my 80mm summilux will come up as taken with the 80 and other times the lens focal length field will be empy. Does anyone else have this problem? Â I'm working on a Mac with OS-X and I mostly use lightroom to sort my images, but prefer Flexcolor for the conversion. (Don't have C1 - wish they would have included the light version like they did with the m8).
Advertisement Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 Hi EH21, Take a look here DMR: Why do some ROM lenses show up in EXIF and others not?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
psquared Posted May 2, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted May 2, 2007 The focal lengths of zoom lenses will not show up in the EXIF. This information is somewhere in the file, as the DMR will display that info when you play back the picture in the camera, but I have not seen a third party application that can tease out this information. Also, I don't know if the file contains the info on the actual focal length used on a zoom. Obviously, this info gets transmitted to the flash, so the DMR should be able to record this info if the firmware directs it. I'm still hoping that the firmware update, if it ever comes out, will correct the situation.

Any members have close contact with Leica know when the DMR new (or modified) firmware will come out?  Some rumours say it should be end Apr/early May 2007. EH21 Posted May 2, 2007 Author Share #4  Posted May 2, 2007 When I wrote "focal length" I meant the type of lens. For my 50mm summicron I get 50mm in the Exif. For my 50mm summilux I get nothing. On some images for the summicron I also get nothing...so that is the weird part.
albertknappmd Posted May 2, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted May 2, 2007 EXIF is hit or miss. with me it is usually miss.... Lightroom does not registger it at all but ACR does... go figure...

Since the zooms do not report a focal length, these lenses do not show in the exif. Â As mentioned in an earlier post, it would be nice if Leica put the lens in the exif, just like it shows on the info screen of the DMR. Â I have a M8 also and the coded lenses never shows up in the lens field, just the focal length field.
EH21 Posted May 3, 2007 Author Share #7 Â Posted May 3, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Okay I think I really confused people with my first post on this by taking my zoom as an example. I am not asking about the actual focal length used being recorded ( like canon and nikon do) with zooms. I just want to know which lens was on the camera when the shot was taken. All of the lenses I am using have the ROM. The thing that is wierd is that some lenses will show up in the lightroom exif info all the time with all shots, some lenses will show up some of the time and then sometimes not, and some won't show up at all. All of these lenses have ROM. I'm wondering if my contacts are loose or something? But it seems that at least one other user is having the same troble. I did do a check and it also appears that different programs are getting the info more reliably. Lightzone seems to show more often the lens I used. Why???? This is important info to me as I'd like to know for example which of my lenses I like better and wish I could sort my images by lens used.
robsteve Posted May 3, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted May 3, 2007 Eric: Â I have noticed with the DMR that it does not always read the ROM when changing lenses. I never spent the time to figure out what was causing it, but I think it is a software thing, not a mechanical/electrical problem. Â If in doubt, I will turn the camera off then on to confirm the lens change gets read. It may have something to do with changing lenses when the camera is asleep or some other odd combination to trigger the non read of the ROM.
EH21 Posted May 5, 2007 Author Share #9 Â Posted May 5, 2007 Robert, Thanks for the suggestions, I'll try that and see if it helps. One odd thing is that sometimes one RAW converter will show the lens and another won't so I was not positive that the problem is with the camera.
