My broken 50mm summilux asph (insert sad face)

The silver lining is that the lens is still optically sound.

The bad news is that the hood assembly has completely failed. I hope the place I bought it will replace it. Otherwise I'll be at the mercy of Schmidt. I'm at a bit of a quandary. First the problems...

(1) the retaining screw on the bottom of the lens has disappeared. The result is that the hole front assembly freely rotates, and can be pulled off. Luckily none of the lenses are a part of this assembly.

(2) two of the three plastic nubs inside the lens hood has fallen off. The hood can be pulled out, but is only held securely on one position.

Then the dilemma... My dilemma is this, I just had this lens optimized at Schmidt. If it is replaced (assuming the retailer is willing to replace it), I'm going to lose that calibration. If I have the lens serviced, it might not be ready for a trip that I have coming in a few weeks.

Another consideration is that these parts seems to be a really simple fix. Your thoughts and expertise is greatly appreciated.

Return it to Leica.

Really poor service at Schmidt on this and I would never let them touch anything again.

Poor service is enough for me to give up the whole Leica . There are only two people I trust and neither work on digital.

Nikon is trying to keep independents away from their cameras also. They refused to even send a replacement screw for a tripod mounting foot. This is an item the user is supposed to tighten by hand. They want the whole lens returned and big money for the "repair".

(I apologize for the double post, but I wanted to provide an update).

When I had my lens calibrated with Schmidt, the lens was never disassembled. Therefore, it appears the lens was manufactured with this little defect because I can't imagine myself to be too abusive to my lenses. As a result, they are charging me about 9usd for the screw, retraining nubs and the glue to reattach the hood. Not the ideal solution, but it could have been much worse where the lens would be sent back to Solms.

The most frustrating part of this saga was dealing with the service personnel. Who are either, incapable of answering a question; or so afraid of giving a less than ideal answer, are afraid of providing an inadequate response. Being a local secondary teacher in Hong Kong, I can attest to that.

Their answer to, "are you familiar with the 50mm summilux asph sliding hood?" With, "lenses must be sent to Solms. And let me call you back." Which they didn't - it is like high school prom all over again.

Samuel, the senior supervisor, is the only one who seems capable of speaking candidly and able to answer questions about the service process. I would recommend others who needs to deal with Schmidt, ask to speak to Samuel directly.

Conclusion, lens finally fixed and spend more time shooting rather than lurking here. Thank you for listening.

Err... why such tiny photographs?

In my haste and frustration, the entire ordeal was recorded spontaneously with my two thumbs. That and the image hosting app resized the images that I took using my phone.

Let's see if these images turn out better
