Apple patent for AF system

Seems like more of a "motor system" since it adjusts either aperture and/or focus. I wonder how they will get it to do both at once (or would there be two separate sets of "muscles"?)

I wonder if one can really patent something (muscle control of focus and iris) that nature has been doing for 300 million years or so? ;)

Corneal muscles?

Muscles! Not necessarily for our eyes, but applying technology for other applications that mimic the same.

If we look back upon invention we find a remarkable correspondence between inventions and our physiology in mechanical and also symbolic terms.

You know it can be patented, and we can be sure that improvements of the concept will follow.

There is some prior art floating around which might be relevant. Here is a link to the abstract of an article in a published proceedings from 2012, by Carpi, Gabriele and De Rossi:

Bioinspired Tunable Lens Driven by Electroactive Polymer Artificial Muscles - Springer

Nick

Nick, you should work for the Patent Office. Maybe you will come up with The Theory of Everything on the side.
