helohe Posted June 22, 2014 Share #1 Posted June 22, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does anyone know why the jpeg preview picture (the small thumbnail picture embedded in the jpeg and dng for previewing) has a black boarder on top and is a bit squeezed? or does only my camera do that? (first image in the screenshot has thumbnail refreshed) Welcome, dear visitor! hoppyman Posted June 22, 2014 Share #2 Posted June 22, 2014 You are just seeing a first peek at the very low resolution embedded preview in the DNG. This is not due to any fault of the camera, only the way that the raw image software works. Your software automatically builds a new preview when you refresh. mjh Posted June 24, 2014 Share #3 Posted June 24, 2014 Just to add to the explanation: The embedded preview thumbnail has the 4:3 aspect ratio of the display and since the picture’s aspect ratio is 3:2, there is a black bar on top of the preview. The software, expecting a 3:2 image, forces this aspect ratio, resulting in a distorted view. This is far from unusual; for example my Pentax K-5 DSLR also creates 4:3 thumbnails with black bars, only there are two smaller bars at the top and bottom rather than a thick bar at the top, but the image gets similarly distorted. Once the software has created its own preview this ceases to be an issue anyway.
jip Posted June 28, 2014 Share #4 Posted June 28, 2014 The previous answers are correct, and I think maybe the black bar is because when you playback the images on your M thats where the exif data is viewed.
