Photoshop CC has a new version (2014) with some enhancements and is free for CC subscribers. However, make sure you close down programs such as Sugarsync before installing or you will have a hung installer and will spend a good deal of your valuable time with Adobe support to sort it out.

If the program loads a process called shellextloader it will conflict with the Adobe installer. Not sure about dropbox and other cloud storage programs but probably best to turn them off when you are trying to install CC 2014. (Updates to the current CC and Bridge are unaffected).

What is Sugarsync?

 

Sugarsync is an alternative to DropBox. I use it to keep files synched among three computers plus the files are available on iPhone and iPad too. It also provides a similar way to share large files. I happen to like it better than Dropbox because it provides more flexibility on what files or folders get synched.

Ok, I finally got round to using the updated Lighroom yesterday and it wouldn't work. The splash screen appeared, then nothing.

 

After a bit of digging around on the web it appears that the problem's caused by the CC update. To solve the problem I downloaded the full trial version of LR 5.5 from Adobe, installed that, and everything is ok.

 

With PS CC (2014) I was asked if I wanted to migrate my actions and presets, but plug ins had to be reloaded - not really much of a problem as the one I use the most is Alienskin Exposure and I had the DMG for that on my hard drive.

Am I the only one who feels nervous when updates make previously usable software obsolete? Does anyone know if a previous RAW format (from an 'old' digital camera is now unreadable with new software? I know that it has happened to scanner software.

The CC app has been asking me repeatedly to update CS6, Photoshop CC and Photoshop CC(2014) with updates to CameraRaw 8.5. No matter how many times I do it, it asks again. I had deleted CS6 and PS CC once I knew the 2014 version worked. Turns out I had to run uninstallers hidden away in Applications/Utilities/Adobe Installers before they were truly gone. Problem solved.

Can I risk uninstalling CC (and a previous CS6) without messing up the new installation? Are there shared system or preference files etc. which might go astray?

The uninstallers I mentioned each have an option for keeping the apps' preferences. It would be a good idea to keep your plug-ins and presets though in case they have to be manually transferred to the new version.

Yes, you do. That's the way it's supposed to be. Photoshop CC 2014 installs alongside Photoshop CC, so now you're having two independent installations.

Yes, you can. Whether you keep the older versions or toss them is totally up to you. I'd recommend to uninstall all versions except the latest after you made sure the latest is up and running flawlessly. Make sure you have migrated all your third-party scripts and plugins for Photoshop because unlike presets, they won't migrate automatically.

 

To unstall, use the operating system's uninstall function ... i. e. in Windows, for example, go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall from there. Do not delete program folders manually.
