semi-ambivalent Posted June 18, 2014 Share #1 Posted June 18, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'll be visiting London for a few days in July and thought it would be good to actually have a room waiting for we three. Any travelers or locals care to submit a few suggestions? Not looking for world-class accommodations but it is London so we're prepared for the shock. Something nice and England-y would be lovely. (I think I'm only along for the ride, but I have mandated a visit to Leica Mayfair if that location helps things.) Thanks so much, s-a

StS Posted June 18, 2014 Share #2 Posted June 18, 2014 Having just stayed in the Grosvenor Hotel at Victoria Station (the hotel has direct access from the station), I can recommend it. The room rate included a very good breakfast and free WiFi, the room was equipped with a safe as well as a kettle and tea - which appears to be standard in English and Japanese hotels, I hope they never drop this habit. Mattresses were good. Very small quirks - rooms in the annex have a different floor level number and some of the lifts appear to be operated by a random generator - my mother and I made bets, which one would come first. If you can live with American-style air conditioning and shower operation, the rest clearly qualifies as English. Breakfast is buffet-style, but all the ingredients for an English breakfast can be picked up. Connections from Victoria Station are obviously excellent. I would stay there again. robert_parker Posted June 19, 2014 Share #3 Posted June 19, 2014 I'll just add a slightly different view - consider Citadines Aparthotel South Kensington, which is actually a French based hotel chain but you'll find quite adequate hotel accommodation at a good price, with good quality rooms just a few yards from Kensington Palace Gardens, the Natural History Museum and the V&A (Victoria and Albert Museum), as well as being a pleasant walk or tube ride form Harrods and the major shops at Piccadilly. There's a nice sense and feel of being in traditional London and the added advantage of having a fridge and microwave in each room, which takes a lot of pressure off when you're uncertain about timings. This isn't swanky top London Hotels (consider the Westmorland in Mayfair or the Park Lane Hotel in Piccadilly if you want that) but the standard is good and 'proper' English breakfasts are just a short distance away in one of the many restaurants nearby.
