Number was assigned 1970 - but remember that Leica assigned numbers in blocks for a given lens type, so if they didn't build all 1000 or 2000 90 Elmarits with numbers assigned in 1970, the numbers would carry over to 1971 or 1972.

LIKELY a 1970 lens, though - 90 Elmarits sold fairly fast (not too exotic, not too expensive).

It is a competent, sharp lens. For "portrait" use, some might prefer a Summicron from the same era, or up through year 2000 (non-APO, non ASPH), precisely because it is slightly dreamy at f/2. But you can get that with the Elmarit, too. Just put a filter on the front and put a couple of fingerprints on the filter. ;)

I have had an Elmarit 90 since 1987 , mine is a 3 cam .It is a wonderful versatile lens which I have used in all sorts of places . It is great for portraits , I open it up fully for portraits , also for travel .

I do not know if they made a third cam only version . Some of the early models may have been 2 cam but could have had the third cam added later.

I like this for a variety of reasons. It's sharp enough not to need any sharpening, with just the right contrast. I used this lens with an adaptor on a D3/Lumix which translates into a 180 mm lens very nicely. No real degradation in color at all & a very light combo to boot.
