Howie Posted May 7, 2014 Share #1 Â Posted May 7, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was wondering if anyone who owns a T has tried the video features. Â If so, how good/bad is it in comparison to other similar cameras? Â What is is the nitrate of the video files? Â How good are the inbuilt microphones? Â Also what sped SD cards are people using? Would I see significant advantage with a faster card for still work (i.e. buffer clearing faster for stills)? Â I have a new project starting soon which will require some video work (short interviews and pieces for the web) and the T system looking attractive for this (plus of course I WANT one!) Â In the past I have used Sony Nex5, Olympus OM-D and Fuji X100s for video & stills so any comparison with those would be useful.
Advertisement Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 Hi Howie, Take a look here Some questions on T and video. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
AlanG Posted May 7, 2014 Share #2 Â Posted May 7, 2014 I don't do a lot of video but FWIW some people I know who are very serious about video are quite excited by the Panasonic GH4. Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kwMWb2KPB4 Â They also are excited by the Sony A7s. None mentioned the Leica T for video. Keep in mind that if you want to go beyond the very very basic, you will need a camera that is capable of being expanded in various ways - monitor, sound, follow focus lenses, etc. The T can't do any of that. Rick Posted May 9, 2014 Share #3 Â Posted May 9, 2014 Hey AlanG, I see you have managed to permeate this thread as well with your sunshine.:p
Howie Posted May 13, 2014 Author Share #4 Â Posted May 13, 2014 Alan G, Â yes I am aware of those cameras and have certainly been impressed with the output of the GH4, but I am looking at the T for mostly good quality still with some video. Â To help me decide does anyone have anyone have any links to OOC video files so I could examine them?
AlanG Posted May 14, 2014 Share #5  Posted May 14, 2014 Hey AlanG, I see you have managed to permeate this thread as well with your sunshine.:p  It seems that any attempt at objectivity of purpose is attacked now. That Kool-Aid must be working. I thought my response above was as gentle and non-confrontational as possible.  I really hate this cr*p and do not want to respond but the poster should at least know that you can't even monitor sound on the T. Are you even aware of that since you did not advise Howie in any way? Why don't we go with the often used phrase here, "horses for courses."  Howie says he needs to shoot interviews and asked about microphones. So clearly he needs to monitor the sound. Maybe even use a remote mic. I am simply trying to make sure he buys something that suits his needs. There are all kinds of video cameras and still/video cameras that would be better.  If you just want to shoot some occasional video clips for fun, that is another story. This is really a case where reducing to the essentials clearly shows it impacts usability. If I misunderstood his needs and request for advice I am sorry for suggesting he not buy a T for this purpose. But the T is not always the best answer no matter how much you want to own one.  What is really funny is how many people on the M thread say they want a version that has no video because they don't want the added complexity and feel it takes away from the camera's purity in some way. Leica seems to think video is essential now but at the same time does not put much into it. If you do buy a T Howie, maybe pick up a cheap video camera for your interviews. CaptZoom Posted May 14, 2014 Share #6 Â Posted May 14, 2014 Get the Leica T, if it's what you want. But instead of picking up both T lenses, get one. Use the remainder to purchase a used Panny GH2 or GH3, which should cover you video needs for odd projects that pop up. With the GHx series you get some options for capture codecs (though the GH2 may need to be hacked to unleash it). I don't know which codec(s) the T uses. theboch Posted May 14, 2014 Share #7  Posted May 14, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Also great for video, but maybe a little bit overkill: Black Magic Cinema Pocket Camera!!  Blackmagic Design: Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera  Price: USD 995.-  A great small video camera which is very capable. JeTexas Posted May 14, 2014 Share #8 Â Posted May 14, 2014 I wonder if they'll add a hotshoe microphone system to the T. The mic inputs of the Sony A7 line is a big plus.
vikasmg Posted June 2, 2014 Share #9  Posted June 2, 2014 I was wondering if anyone who owns a T has tried the video features. If so, how good/bad is it in comparison to other similar cameras? ....   I'm not a big video user but on a recent session I decided to try it out just for the heck of it. In case you are interested the video is the last item at Vikas M Gore | 20140531 Perumal T  I thought the quality was surprisngly good and make me curious to expore video more. Turn the sound up when you want it. Not because the volume is low but I think the music sounds better when played loud!  - Vikas
