Bizarre M7 DX reading exposure comp error fixed

I wonder if anyone else has had this happen or even if they realised this has happened. It appears my exposure compensation dial on the back has somehow ended up offset by just under -1/3 of a stop.

I haven't had the camera long (s/h purchase) but noted the little flashing light was always on no matter which film I put in, doesn't bother me much as I find it hard to trust DX done like this (only tells you when the camera is turned on what ISO it reads and I rarely have the camera to my eye when I flick the lever), I also tend to shoot B&W at anything but the box speed. Anyways being an engineer I thought I would wiggle the exposure comp dial about whilst looking through the viewfinder just to make sure there wasn't a dodgy contact or something and lo and behold as soon as I turn it slightly -ve from the 0 point the light goes out. I then with both a 100 and 400 ISO film canister loaded compared my meter readings with DX to the camera ISO set manually and confirmed that the -1/3 does indeed seem to really be 0. Utterly bizarre, did I force it round by mistake when I got the camera as the lock button felt sticky? I can't remember. Had someone else done that in the past?

I surely can't be the only person in the world whose DX reading seemed faulty because the exposure comp dial is misaligned slightly so perhaps this post might help someone.

For me the lower light goes out if I move the exposure comp away from zero and back. I always thought it was part of the dodgy DX reader circuits. I set my ISO manually now for the past 4 years. I haven't done any accurate tests to see if the meter is offset by 1/3 rd of a stop. As the light doesn't always come on I didn't think there was a permanent offset. Maybe I'll check the next time I have an empty camera?

I've promised myself if I get a slide film back with wrong exposures I'd send the M7 in for a check-up until then the manual ISO seems to work.

Others have reported trouble with the new optical DX reader too so that might not be a permanent fix either.

Regards, Lincoln

Hi, this was been a common subject; here's one comprehensive thread:
