Advertisement Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 Hi Hortense, Take a look here Photo book software?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Pointcolville Posted April 27, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted April 27, 2007 I have used Blurb (Blurb | Self publish with free BookSmart software for Windows or Mac) which is proprietary to their publishing service. I was very happy with the software and the result. I haven't used any stand-alone software.
losta Posted April 27, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted April 27, 2007 I second Blurb and their software Booksmart studio. I saw some samples of their books at PhotoShop World in Boston earlier this month, I was really impressed with the quality, it really looks like a regular book with dust jacket and all. I have been working on making a book with their software. The pricing is quite reasonable too.
barbican Posted April 27, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted April 27, 2007 I tried some B&W with blurb and the results were not very good, I'd give it 5/10. The main problem being a magenta shift. The DJ was slightly less quality, as you'd probably expect. The results with Apple's service (fulfilled by mypublisher?) were slightly better but not enough to use them until technology improves a little more. I've heard those printing color have had better experience.
stunsworth Posted April 27, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted April 27, 2007 Be careful and check shipping prices. When the LUG book was created using one of the online sites (I think Blurb) shipping to Europe matched the cost of buying the book.

Hortense Posted April 27, 2007 Author Share #7 Â Posted April 27, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thank you all for responding. I guess I didn't make myself clear: I want to design the book and find my own publisher for resale. Â The Forum is great--thanks.
Guest stnami Posted April 27, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted April 27, 2007 Having put together a bunch of visual arts texts publishers will most likely insist on either QuarkXPress or In Design as your software format as that's what the industry is geared for. I completed the layout of my first books on the old Pagemaker as that's what was the go in Singapore, QuarkXPress here in Australia is the go. Publishers well that's a mindfield and a half, I was lucky that I had Oxford University Press pre organised, since then I have been sold to other publishers a few times. Good luck but places like Lulu are a good start if you don't have contacts. Check out Luminous Landscape and do a search, I think Michael's Bangladesh book was self published. Anyway good luck on this rocky road
hdrmd Posted April 27, 2007 Share #9 Â Posted April 27, 2007 I have had good results from the book publishing feature in Aperture. good quality and very good turn around time. Getting the DNG file into Aperture takes a little doing, but there are several ways to do it. For purposes of book publishing it is easy to convert the DNG to jpegs or tiff after working on them in Photoshop. DR
palmskov Posted April 28, 2007 Share #10  Posted April 28, 2007 I use mypixx fotobuch. A german company. All you have to do is download a small program (german or english) and start designing. Ordering is done throught the program as well. A bit like apple's own software.  Check it out at Fotobuch von fotobuch.de | mehrfacher Testsieger | 'Bestnoten für Qualität & Flexibilität..' Atlasman Posted April 28, 2007 Share #11  Posted April 28, 2007 Can anyone recommend software for designing photo books, short of Adobe Indesign? Something more simple like the software for Mac Iphoto books. Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!  I've been using JAlbum since 2005. Its free, the authors have evolved it into a great tool for showcasing a collection of images.  Here is the link to their site: JAlbum - the free web photo album software and photo gallery software  Visit one of my sites at Welcome and enter "Regency" (without the quotes) click enter, and you will see a recent example of their software in action.  Hope this helps. catapa Posted April 29, 2007 Share #12  Posted April 29, 2007 Can anyone recommend software for designing photo books, short of Adobe Indesign? Something more simple like the software for Mac Iphoto books. Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!  The right photo book software depends on how or where you want to get the photo book printing done. The photo book applications provided for free by most photo services provide can be quite useful and as a last resort you can always prepare complete pages in Photoshop and load them as a jpeg into your photobook. My recommendations are FotoInsight (Windows only) or Printing-1 (for Windows and Mac). Both avoid the limitations of the pdf format.
photolandscape Posted April 30, 2007 Share #13 Â Posted April 30, 2007 Blurb strikes me as the superior choice. I think I'll try them on something fairly straightforward and simple first. I'll be interesting to see how their color management does and how the printed images compare to what I see on my monitor.
wparsonsgisnet Posted May 1, 2007 Share #14 Â Posted May 1, 2007 A friend of mine just used Blurb and his book looked great. Â One nice feature is that you can print them in onesies. Their software lets you design the book; his has both pix and words.
