sihooyin1 Posted April 23, 2014 Share #1 Â Posted April 23, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I have a Leica SUMMICRON-R 90mm (Type 2) which has an E55 filter thread. Â I have a generic 55-77mm step-up, but the male side doesn't reach into the threading because of the gap caused by the lens hood. Â What to do?? Â Perhaps there are step-up rings with a longer male section, if anyone knows of any? Â Or, maybe I can pair 2 adapters together? Â I anticipate I might have this problem with my 60mm Macro-Elmarit R and 135mm Elmarit-R as well. Would it be easy to just remove the hood, or is it somehow an integral element to the lens build? tobey bilek Posted June 9, 2014 Share #2  Posted June 9, 2014 Hi, I have a Leica SUMMICRON-R 90mm (Type 2) which has an E55 filter thread. I have a generic 55-77mm step-up, but the male side doesn't reach into the threading because of the gap caused by the lens hood.  What to do??  Perhaps there are step-up rings with a longer male section, if anyone knows of any?  Or, maybe I can pair 2 adapters together?  I anticipate I might have this problem with my 60mm Macro-Elmarit R and 135mm Elmarit-R as well. Would it be easy to just remove the hood, or is it somehow an integral element to the lens build?    What to do??  Leave the hood retracted and buy 77mm shade. B&H sells one for 35/50/70 mm lenses. The rubber unfolds for longer lenses. I think it is a Hoya brand, $25. I use it on a 24/120 zoom for which 24 mm shade is of no value at longer lengths.  If your 77 filters are not double threaded, buy 55.
bull40 Posted June 12, 2014 Share #3 Â Posted June 12, 2014 I've heard that you may be able to screw an additional one or more, as needed, filter rings stacked on to the lens to give you the elevation you need. If you have access to a few older or cheaper 55 filters, remove the filter glass and stack together until needed depth is met. Please, do not attempt to remove the lens hood. Likely damage and certain reduced resale value will occur. Personally, I would just buy the correct sized filters, as needed.
