M Series Lens Backorder Situation

Chris--

Welcome aboard the forum! You've plumbed the depths of our knowledge with your initial post! :D

That's the perennial question with Leica. There is always a problem getting one or another lens because Leica has such a small production facility. They produce a batch of one particular lens, then convert to produce a batch of another. It's just part of what makes Leica equipment perform the way it does: The products aren't cookie-cutter items.

Now add to that normal situation the demand the influx of M8 buyers has placed on the company. They are selling far more cameras now than even they anticipated, and many of those purchasers are buying new lenses as well.

And add to that the assumption that many dealers make--particularly smaller dealers--viz that Leica is a slow-turn line, so 'I don't have to worry about keeping much in stock.'

So, to answer your question--just assume three to four months for whatever lens you're looking for. Probably it won't take that long, but it could take longer. It depends on what lens you want and when your dealer ordered it. Since larger dealers tend to order in larger quantities, they will tend to see product sooner.

Or, to rephrase: Join the queue that the rest of us are used to sitting in! :(

I can picture the scene (I should set this one up and shoot it)

In the back of the Leica Factory, there is the workbench of Guenther the Lens maker.

He has been making lenses for many years with care to detail and the Leica tradition of craftmanship.

He arrives early in the morning and dons his leather apron.

His eyes sparkle beneath bushy white eyebrows; he is happy to see that there is such demand for his craft.

He chucks a rough lump of glass in the vise on his bench, takes out his file, and begins the shaping process that will result, in three or four months time, in a 28mm summicron.
