smb Posted April 12, 2014 Share #2 Posted April 12, 2014 Very nice. But, I do not understand the need of a 5cm viewfinder with a 5cm lens. What is the purpose? Please, explain. Thank you.
SideB Posted April 12, 2014 Share #3 Posted April 12, 2014 Look at his eyes: they are both open. With the 5cm SBOOI viewfinder you get a lifesize view with a brightline frame. Nothing equals it, not even an SLR.
Iansky Posted April 12, 2014 Author Share #4 Posted April 12, 2014 The camera viewfinder window is very small so I wanted to get the 5cm viewfinder as it allows easy viewing and as demonstrated in the photo, you can have both eyes open. The optical viewfinder is also clearer and brighter than any DSLR finder.

Iansky Posted April 13, 2014 Author Share #6 Posted April 13, 2014 That 's the way to do it Thanks for that. It is great to go right back to basics and have no frills, it forces me to stop, think, consider light intensity / direction, composition and the focal length. All good stuff that takes me right back. Now just got to get used to having to wait to see the results as no instant feedback!

Iansky Posted April 13, 2014 Author Share #8 Posted April 13, 2014 I like waiting for the results. It is seeing the image again from a fresh point of view. I do agree to an extent but digital has spoilt me and I do like the ability to view and re-shoot if not happy, not always possible with film so it definitely slows the process down and makes me think more before pressing the shutter! payasam Posted April 13, 2014 Share #9 Posted April 13, 2014 I agree that the screw Leica's finder (with the exception of the IIIg) is awful and a SBOOI for 50mm is a considerable improvement. The camera is a IIIf (Roman three rather than one hundred and eleven), by the way, and the IROOA is a lens hood.
Iansky Posted April 13, 2014 Author Share #10 Posted April 13, 2014 Thanks Payasam, It was a finger problem on my part, I usually write it as IIIf and again I meant to say IROOA lens hood rather than viewfinder! Either way, it is a great camera and now it is the complete set and currently loaded with Tri-X so waiting to finish the film and have it processed. Loving the trip back down memory lane to my days of shooting purely analogue on assignments and carrying the Leica's for the occasions where the Nikon F4's was just too loud! payasam Posted April 13, 2014 Share #11 Posted April 13, 2014 I thought it necessary to make the corrections because there is a possibility of this thread misleading people who know nothing of Leicas. In the 1960s, I remember, most professional photographers abandoned their screw mount Leicas in favour of M models, which really are much faster in use and more convenient. Iansky Posted April 14, 2014 Author Share #13 Posted April 14, 2014 Thanks Payasam & Stevesurf. I used Leica "M" analogues (M4-2/M4-P/M6/M6TTL) when I worked as a Photojournalist, they made great 2nd cameras especially when I needed a quiet camera for sensitive events. I wanted a Barnack special with it's real heritage and the IIIf is the last of the true Barnacks as the IIIG although a superb camera is a mix of old and new with M3 frame lines for different lenses. If I had the money (and I do not) I would like an M series analogue again but even used the combo of camera+lens is still an expensive purchase -one day! Steve, you are right, I am lucky to live in a lovely part of the UK so intend to try and capture some of photo opportunities as they present themselves.
