While tempting, this raises the usual questions. Are they about to announce a newer version? larger sensor? CMOS with Live View? or is it just due to sagging sales? Either way, very tempting. For me, the long list of refinements added up, and as a working pro, the 3 year warranty was certainly a factor, and since I'm not anxious to be an early adopter, not interested in live view or the rumored 4k video, that I love the look of the CCD, this was a relatively easy decision...for me. Things I like about it are: Much improved buffering capacity. I take photos of horses and wild animals, so this is a great improvement for me. Base ISO of 100 GPS. Not essential, but again handy with wild animals. Improved navigation of menus. Several slick shortcuts. 3 year warranty Apparently, sensor is improved but I have not had it long enough to notice. Autofocus seems to be faster and more sure, which is also a claim they have. Tactile changes are nice but not worth the extra $ Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
rsmphoto Posted April 30, 2014 Share #13 Posted April 30, 2014 Reinhard, Sorry to hear that. I've had equipment stolen and it's not ever a pleasant experience. As for noticeable improvement, well probably none that you would notice immediately. The better performance at a bit higher ISO is certainly there, and the improved accuracy of color performance (that was one thing I was interested in since I shoot in difficult, often mixed lighting situations). I like the changes to the navigation controls, the grey card white balance option is useful. I work quite a bit on a tripod so the predictive auto focus I can't comment on - yet, but I'm glad it's there when needed. The S2 was certainly ok at shooting lifestyle, but the focus a tad slow, so the S should improve on that. How important is a warranty to you? For me it was the warranty on the camera that made difference I guess - it made better sense than buying an additional used S2P body as a backup to my existing S2, which would likely languish in a bag little used, tying up capital better invested in a lens. This is most likely the last, and most refined CCD version of the S (that's my guess of course), so that may be a deciding factor for you too. In any case, I will be very happy with the S for at least a couple of years while I watch the release and results of the coming revision. As I mentioned in a previous post, I'm not interested in Live View or Video (I signed on as a photographer, not videographer), nor higher ISO performance since I generally work at ISO 100, nor wifi, BUT extended dynamic range may be tempting, and who knows what else this new S may offer. Bottom line, if you were absolutely happy with the S2 you might be ok staying with another, especially if budget is a concern. If budget allows, and you think you'll take advantage of any of the improvements the S has, on a regular basis, and want a fresh 3 year warranty, the upgrade may be worth it. Hope this helped. junior Posted April 30, 2014 Share #14 Posted April 30, 2014 thanks guys for your swift response. i seems to me the differences are not that severe. giveen, the faster AF would be nice... actually i kept my Hasselblad/Phase stuff when i got the S2, and had the hardest time getting into the S' look, especially skin tones, which seemed to have an obnoxious redish tint. only recently did i take a real liking to the S2, to be honest one day before the gear got stolen, along with an M 240, some H lenses and all sorts of stuff. so, it'S like i'll be either getting another S2, or an S, or stick with my Blad stuff, which has some advantages, like Capture One compatibility, easier color management, smoother skin tones. best reinhard Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
