evering Posted March 24, 2014 Share #1 Posted March 24, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I used to always shoot raw when I owned my d800. Now that I am using the M240 I notice that I can't get the image properly loaded into my iPad. (I could load the Nikon dng in with no problem). Now that I have a new sensor I am wondering if I will get any better results using the Leica dng. What is the prevailing view among users? Is the general consensus to use dng / raw? In I am interested in getting experienced uses views. thanks

If you want to view your M files on an ipad shoot DNG+JPEG. That will give the ipad a decent size jpeg to process. The setting I use when I am going to want to use the ipad for viewing is DNG+JPEG. sandymc Posted March 24, 2014 Share #3 Posted March 24, 2014 iPads (and iDevices in general) don't decode raw files, unless you have one of the raw processing app, e.g., PhotoRaw, installed. What iPads do when they come across a raw file is to display the jpeg preview that's embedded in the raw file. As it happens, by default Nikon embed a large preview image, but Leica embed a small one. So a raw image from a Nikon will look ok, but a raw image from a Leica, not so much. tobey bilek Posted March 25, 2014 Share #5 Posted March 25, 2014 Why would you buy an expensive camera and throw away more half the data and cripple further processing ? Nikon electronics are miles ahead, but leica has limited space in the camera and their philosophy is simplicity and rightfully so. I really do not not use Nikons electronics and just set the camera to M. Pics are more consistent and post is faster.
