Case for X Vario

Hello, for those of you who own the X Vario, what kind of case do you carry the camera in? Is any one of you using the Leica Small System case #18746?

I use a Billingham Hadley Digital.

I use a lowepro streamline 100 bag ...... The XV just fits with space for battery, evf etc.

I have several of these I use to carry lenses (with the dividers in place) and other bits when out with my M or MM.

Very helpful that it doesn't look like a camera bag and is quite cheap.

Hello, for those of you who own the X Vario, what kind of case do you carry the camera in? Is any one of you using the Leica Small System case #18746?

I recently tried the Leica Small System case for which Leica gives no dimensions. I found that it would work with a naked XV, but not with EVF, hand-grip and lens-hood attached. So I returned it as unsuitable. I am currently using a

I do not use the lower detachable section. The bag is very well made, opens with the top away from your body for improved security, and provides a snug fit for a fully fitted XV. I looked for a slightly bigger version, but the depth does not increase. I should add that my EVF has an eye-cup fitted. There is also room for spare batteries, cards, cash travel bits etc. And it has a hidden rain-proof cover which pulls out to cover the entire bag. For the reduced price I think it is a bargain.

The new Tamrac Apache 2 and 4 bags also look interesting.

 

I just purchased a ThinkTank Retrospective 5 bag from another X Vario owner, and it seems quite usable -- which, of course, depends on what else you want to put into the bag. The previous owner opted for the larger Retrospective 7 bag for this reason (he also has a DLux 6 that he wants to put into the bag).

These are very well made. I use the "5" for one M + another lens, or XVario, and the "7" for 2 M's, another lens or two, ND filters, etc.

Hello, for those of you who own the X Vario, what kind of case do you carry the camera in?

 

If you want to follow through on the extravagance of buying a Leica, you might consider one of Luigi’s smaller outfit bags. It’s lightweight, all leather and made to Luigi’s high standards of craftsmanship. The X Vario (with lens hood but without accessory viewfinder)) fits into the larger of the two internal compartments like a hand in a glove and there’s room for a few extras in the other compartment. You could also use it for a small M system. I wouldn’t use it in extreme conditions but it comes to no harm and fully protects the contents in light rain. An unusually strong velcro closure keeps the case shut. I’ve found it to be a very practical way of carrying the camera and my wife assures me that it doesn’t look at all like a lady’s handbag. I choose to believe her.

You're very welcome. Yes, that is the Luigi wrist strap which I'm very pleased with. I use the view screen to frame and focus and I find it easier to do that with the camera on a wrist strap rather than a neck strap.

For city tours I use a LV Roman MM. Has enough space for a small umbrella, 0.5l water bottle, cam and other stuff, whilst being rather convenient.

I tried several cases trying to keep the package small but wanted to carry the X-Vario with the lens hood attached. Ended up with the Billingham Digital Case where I can carry the Vario lens down and the padded flap protects the screen. Enough room for the EVF, Polarizing filter, etc. Two partitions with flaps fit inside on either side of the lens. The nice thing about the Billingham is that you can add an external Billingham pouch. I do a lot of shooting of evidence inside in bad light and when necessary can just snap on a pouch with an SF58 inside. Otherwise I can leave the pouch off.

Sorry, I should have clarified at the outset that I would be using the XV with a lens hood but not the EVF or the grip. I know from other posts that the Leica bag will hold the XV with the hood attached. For the price, the Samsonite case suggested by you seems to be a great buy. However, I'd like to know from johnnyj how the Hadley digital and Leica case compare, assuming he tried both.

I tried the Leica small case and it just didn't have the room that I was looking for. The Billingham is just a little larger. The nicest thing about the Billingham is the ability to easily add the extra pouch. With the Billingham case I can fit: 2 batteries, the Watson battery charger, the EVF, Leica polarizer filter kit, the X-Vario with the lens shade attached and the half case attached, a small Metz remote flash, and some SD cards. In place of the Leica half case you could easily attach the Vario hand grip. It's a nice tight package that I can just pick up and go with. The Leica small case would work without the small Metz flash and the polarizing kit. I put the SF58 Flash in the extra Billingham pouch and attach it when I need to bring the larger flash.

The Leica small case is a nice case though and I still have it. I tend towards being a boy scout and put my camera cases together with the intent of being able to grab the case and go and everything will be there that I might need. The Leica small case is well constructed and also has a flap that will protect the camera screen when you put the camera in lens down.

Have a look at Kalahari, the kaama series.

Lovely leather and multiple sizes.

They also don't look like camera bags. It's only up close you feel a real quality item.

I use a K-21 but there are smaller ones if you just want the camera.

For non leather I use Kata. The DR431 is perfect for a small hard case.
