McFlyRemix Posted February 22, 2014 Share #1 Posted February 22, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi folks, I have a really old M7 which is produced around 2003. Old DX reader and viewfinder are working just fine for me. Recently, I've encountered a wired problem with the shutter dial. It seems like every shutter speed that I selected is actually working on AUTO (display the shutter speed from the meter and work that way, even on and it seems like 1/500 and 1/250 are still working--but represent 1/125 and 1/60... It's kind of wired, and I had a similar problem few days ago (AUTO working as 1/125 displaying dot and triangles , 1s working as AUTO displaying shutter speed) but it got automatically fixed on its own the day after. Anybody had the same problem? Should I sent it for CLA?

pop Posted February 22, 2014 Share #2 Posted February 22, 2014 Is the battery reasonably fresh?
McFlyRemix Posted February 23, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted February 23, 2014 Is the battery reasonably fresh? Not sure.. that's my only 2 batteries now. They've been used for around 10 films but I accidentally leave the meter switch on for few times so.. Will that affect the dial? if the battery is low I suppose there should be some warning when I turn on the switch.. Anyway I'll try to get new pairs tmr to see how it goes. stevesurf Posted February 23, 2014 Share #4 Posted February 23, 2014 From the manual ~ "In aperture priority mode, the exposure is con- trolled automatically and continuously, with shut- ter speeds in the range from 1/1000s to 32s. These shutter speeds, like most of those set manually, are created electronically, which means they are only available if there is sufficient power…" "By contrast, the shutter speeds of 1/60s and 1/125s, which can be selected in manual mode and are additionally identified by a white line en- graved next to the values, are created mechani- cally and are therefore always available, i.e. even with no power supply." I've found my M7 to be a bit unpredictable with very low batteries or having left the meter lock switch off, sometimes resulting in the camera bag pressing against the shutter button. It is also supposed to display "bc" initially when turned on to indicate new batteries required. Hope it works out!

Thus I tried with an old pair of batteries that should give me "bc" warning. Then it seems like 1/125 and 1/60 are working just at their position and every other position is "bc". However, when I put the newer batteries back in, the 1/500 and 1/250 start working as 1/125 and 1/60 (everything else including the initial 1/125 and 1/60 are working as AUTO) which is something that should never happen(1/125 and 1/60 are mechanically set to that position anyway right?) What are those unpredictable situation that you've encountered with your M7?
McFlyRemix Posted February 25, 2014 Author Share #6 Posted February 25, 2014 UPDATE: I changed a new set of battery and it still works the same.. Is that kind of failure of dial?
wattsy Posted February 25, 2014 Share #7 Posted February 25, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) UPDATE:I changed a new set of battery and it still works the same.. Is that kind of failure of dial? Sounds like it. Maybe the linkage between the physical dial and the electronic contacts that correspond to the dial markings is broken/loose? That would be probably be a simpler fix than some wider electronic failure.
