Advertisement Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Hi hoppyman, Take a look here M corrections in Adobe Camera Raw. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
xrogers Posted February 15, 2014 Share #22 Posted February 15, 2014 I don't think disagreeing is silly. Adobe is still saying this package is a limited time offer (yes, I know they've repeatedly extended it), and I'd like to stick with something for at least 5 years. The continuing cost easily beats the one year deal---I care about the other four-plus years far more than the one. Adobe won't tell me (not even roughly) what the price is for those years, just that it will be whatever it is. I just called their 800 number and asked, and their people claim to have no idea what will happen with the price after the first year is up---maybe it will go up, maybe it will stay the same, they don't know. I think they way this subscription thing has been handled shows too much money focus, and not enough product/customer focus. The intro offer feels like bait, and I truly hate being baited. Different people have different sensibilities, but I'm not ready to commit to a subscription with this sort of company.
hoppyman Posted February 15, 2014 Share #23 Posted February 15, 2014 No, disagreeing is not silly. However you were mistaken on the cost for subscribing currently when I provided the correct information. I do not know what the prices of any product bought as perpetual licence or subscription will be in twelve months. There are no guarantees, how could there be? The subscription model doesn't suit your preferences, that is fine. It does suit others. For me it is very compelling. I just provided the facts on what is available. Whatever licences you already have will continue to be valid and there have been some feature updates (point updates) as always. If you don't want/need the features that are unique then nothing need change for you.
rscheffler Posted February 15, 2014 Share #24 Posted February 15, 2014 In terms of adding new cameras to an older software suite, don't forget about Adobe's DNG converter which will let you take various manufacturers' raw files and convert them to DNG to use with older conversion software. Naturally this applies less to Leica cameras because they already use DNG as the raw file format. A tradeoff though appears to be no lens correction profiles for such converted files. Also keep in mind your current OS generation... Upgrading to a new computer might force you into corresponding software upgrades due to dropped support of older versions. I'm somewhat in this situation with a 2009 era iMac on which I run OSX 10.6.8 and Adobe's now freely available CS2 suite.... I find PS CS2 meets my needs for the few times LR is insufficient. But, if I want to run LR5 on that machine, in order to natively process raws from recent Sony cameras, I need to upgrade to a newer version of OSX, which will break compatibility with CS2... So for those raws, I've been using the DNG converter as a work around. What I will likely do is create an OS volume clone and upgrade it to Mavericks, on which I'll run LR5, then boot from the 10.6.8 partition whenever I need CS2. Kind of a pain, but avoids the cost of new software and the perpetual subscription. While it's 'only' $10/month currently, it all adds up... Where I will run into trouble is if/when the iMac dies and I replace it with something more current. Or, I have to shop around for something used from that era... I can see why these subscription plans are very popular - the small amounts feel painless, but after adding a number of them for a variety of 'necessary services,' and you're suddenly spending considerably more. Kind of a 'death through a thousand cuts' type situation. For the time being, I'm also trying to avoid the subscription plans. We'll see how long Lightroom remains a standalone product. Might be that eventually I'll be running everything through the DNG converter...
xrogers Posted February 16, 2014 Share #25 Posted February 16, 2014 No, disagreeing is not silly. There are no guarantees, how could there be? The subscription model doesn't suit your preferences, that is fine. It does suit others. For me it is very compelling. I just provided the facts on what is available. I took my numbers directly off the Adobe website. My first line on this topic said it was currently $10 a month on a limited time offer. I get the $20 a month after-special-offer price from their web site, where I can't find any other option to get PS (outside of full CC). The price certainly could end up different, and if so, I'll consider that. I'm not comfortable speculating about what Adobe might offer in the future, I'm just looking at what they offer today. I also have no problem with people getting value from the Adobe offerings. Those folks can speak for themselves, and I'll try not to say anything negative about them. If that's silly or mistaken, so be it.
