I visited him, and we were puzzled with this item. Does it belong to a microcospe? The case, which I did not photograph, is beautifully lined with silk. Thank you for your help! You are probably right. Unless the optics some how fit over where the microscope eye piece lens would go. It looks like there is a tightening screw used to secure the optics over something.
