Benefit of Cable Release

I agree with most of what has been said. The self-timer works fine to stop any vibrations induced by the physical act of pressing the button manually, and is fine for unchanging subjects. But if you're waiting for that moment when the sun breaks through just for a second or so ........

I've had trouble with a cheap cable release both on my M and on my R8/9s. It works, but it doesn't screw in very far, and it therefore has a tendency to fall out if it gets rotated even slightly. I bought the Nikon one that people recommended on this Forum (I forget the model number) and it's perfect.

After spending 15mins trying to find the timed release on my M7 ( :( ) I realized I need a cable release.

Found a mint second hand Leica (14076) one on ebay, so hopefully this is nicely made

I don't carry a tripod but often take long exposures at night, balancing the camera on various things, such as walls.

The main advantage of a cable release over a timer is being able to pick the precise moment and the main advantage over an electronic remote control is that if the camera falls off the wall on the wrong side I can pull it back from oblivion :D
