I highly recommend using Trim Enabler 3.0 groths.org for internal non-Apple SSD.

It's free or $10 for the Pro version. I use it for a Crucial 960GB SSD in a 2009 17" MacBook Pro. Not needed for Apple SSD.

Worth reading:

Lloyd Chambers' MPG blog - Restoring solid state drive performance with DiskTester ‘recondition’

One can also use Apple's Disk Utility erase with security overwrite for this. Several passes required.

DiskTester ‘recondition’ is useful as it also shows the progress of the procedure.

Yes Trim prolongs the lifetime of a SSD but basically a SSD will last you longer than a HDD will be safe to use...

I've used the same application though, in my MacPro with PCI-E SSD for ultra fast RAID storage...
