Guest redge Posted January 27, 2014 Share #1 Posted January 27, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Videos made with the M 240 are appearing on various platforms (e.g. Vimeo, YouTube) and there is no one place where they are being showcased. In addition, the videos range from tests (some of them quite dull) to highly creative work. This morning, I started a web site to collect M 240 videos that are of interest substantively and/or technically. The web site is at Leica M 240 Video. So that one can follow up on the artist's work, posts will include links to the filmmaker's other presences on the web (e.g. Twitter, Website, Vimeo, etc). For those of you who use Twitter, the following account has been set up to announce new videos: @leicavideo. There are currently posts about three videos and I'll be posting several more in the next couple of days. Happy to hear suggestions for improvement to the site, which is based on Tumblr. Cheers P.S. Please bear with me on the design of the Twitter header. I thought it more important to just get this going than futz around over an icon that doesn't infringe on Leica's trademarks and finding a background that contrasts well with Twitter's white type

01af Posted January 27, 2014 Share #2 Posted January 27, 2014 This morning, I started a web site to collect M (Typ 240) videos that are of interest substantively and/or technically. [...] There are currently posts about three videos and I'll be posting several more in the next couple of days. Nice idea ... but—three points. (1) The camera's name is "Leica M (Typ 240)" ... not M 240. It's okay to sloppily abbreviate in a tongue-in-cheek-typed forum post, but not in the title bar of a website specifically dedicated to this camera. And what is this website's name going to be when the next Leica M model comes along? (2) What about those videos created with other Leica cameras besides the M (Typ 240), such as V-Lux, C-Lux, D-Lux, or X Vario? Are these off-limits? (3) Who exactly is putting up those videos on your new website? Is it you? If so, do you have the authors' permissions?
wattsy Posted January 27, 2014 Share #3 Posted January 27, 2014 (3) Who exactly is putting up those videos on your new website? Is it you? If so, do you have the authors' permissions? It's tumblr. Rightly or wrongly 'reblogging' is the nature of the beast.
chris_tribble Posted January 27, 2014 Share #4 Posted January 27, 2014 Nice idea ... but—three points. Oh 01af - why so grumpy? Isn't it nice that someone's trying to do a community service?
Guest redge Posted January 27, 2014 Share #5 Posted January 27, 2014 Nice idea ... but—three points. (1) The camera's name is "Leica M (Typ 240)" ... not M 240. It's okay to sloppily abbreviate in a tongue-in-cheek-typed forum post, but not in the title bar of a website specifically dedicated to this camera. Thanks for the questions: 1. The website URL (leica-video) contemplates successor cameras. The name of the blog can be changed anytime. I'll think about your suggestion to change the name to Leica M (Type 240) Video, but I'm inclined to think that the brackets are cumbersome and out of sync with how the camera is actually being discussed on the web. 2. I am principally interested in M 240 video. It would be nice if there was a site that included select video drawn from all Leica cameras, but that would require much more time than I have to devote to this. Perhaps someone else with more resources will undertake a more comprehensive project. 3. The images on the site are actually links to the filmmaker's own URL. They just happen to be in graphic rather than text form. In other words, the videos are not on Tumblr's servers. The four that are currently up are actually on Vimeo's servers, where the filmmakers put them. Cheers P.S. Due to how Tumblr handles links, some of the links in the text part of the posts weren't working. This has now been corrected.
Guest redge Posted January 27, 2014 Share #6 Posted January 27, 2014 It's tumblr. Rightly or wrongly 'reblogging' is the nature of the beast. Perhaps I should point out that each of the videos has a paper airplane icon. This icon is on Vimeo's own site on each of the linked videos. If you click on the icon, you'll find that it is an overt invitation to share the video, including via an embed code. The exception is the CicLAvia video, where the icon isn't showing for some reason but is in fact on the Vimeo file here: https://vimeo.com/70382249. Click on the icon, and you'll see several ways to share the file, including the embed method that I'm using. How did this idea for a web site and Twitter account originate? I wanted to make a list of M (Type 240) videos that I came across that I thought were substantively and/or technically interesting (they are not all that easy to find due in part to various names being used for the camera, and some of them are a waste of time). As I have a Vimeo account, my initial idea was to create an album/playlist for M 240 videos there. But then I realized that not everyone is, or will be, uploading these videos to Vimeo. So I decided to make a list outside Vimeo. Having made that decision, it occurred to me to share the list with others. So that's what I'm doing. Cheers

Guest redge Posted January 27, 2014 Share #8 Posted January 27, 2014 I know, I wasn't being critical. I'm a fan of Tumblr, Vimeo and similar websites. Yes, I know you weren't being critical. But the question of copyright having been raised by someone else, I figured that you gave me the perfect opportunity to clarify/expand on the question

How about just calling it Leica M Video. The Type 240 is the only M that can do video at the moment and that would allow you to include any future M cameras with video in the future

The Type 240 is the only M that can do video at the moment and that would allow you to include any future M cameras with video in the future Thanks Martin. At the end of the day, my objective is to make it as easy as possible for people to find the site. I need to take into account what search terms people are likely to use and also choose a title that, from a search perspective, is neither too broad nor too narrow. On Google, a search for the phrase leica m video yields 4.7 million hits. A search for leica m 240 video yields 366K hits. Searches for leica m typ 240 video (typ being suggested by 01af) and leica m type 240 video yield 180K results and 140K respectively, but may be too narrow. I have to look at why typ gets more hits than type, because I doubt that very many people searching in English use the former. Interestingly, I just noticed that major online vendor B&H is using "leica m 240" on its site. The suggestions are much appreciated, still working on it. It's all Leica's fault for calling the camera the Leica M

The Type 240 is the only M that can do video at the moment and that would allow you to include any future M cameras with video in the future Forgot to address your second point, When Leica introduces a successor, I can change the name easily enough because the URL name itself, which is leica-video, is not camera specific. My foregoing comment assumes that the site has any relevance by the time a successor appears. If someone, including the owner of this site, establishes a dedicated Leica video forum, it may make what I'm doing redundant.
Guest redge Posted January 28, 2014 Share #13 Posted January 28, 2014 Pleased to report that the Twitter account is now being followed by one of the filmmakers whose work the site has showcased and that he has retweeted two posts to his Twitter followers. That's encouraging. It would be great if the site and the Twitter account lead to greater exposure for Leica M (Type 240) films, and the filmmakers who make them. One of the benefits of the Twitter account is that I can use hashtags that should bring in a broader audience. At the moment, I'm using #leica, #leicavideo, #leicam, #leicam240, #video and #film. I'm not using #m240. Do a twitter search on that hashtag and you'll find out why. It does connect to some Leica tweets, but mostly to tweets about something else to shoot with. I need to add a decent Twitter icon asap. If someone has an idea that doesn't infringe on Leica trademarks, let me know. The Twitter "egg" really doesn't quite cut it
Guest redge Posted February 1, 2014 Share #14 Posted February 1, 2014 I've added a number of new videos, including Sean Smith's documentary for The Guardian: Funny Girls: behind the scenes at Blackpool's longest-running drag revue. Thanks to Chris Tribble for the heads up on that video.
