andybarton Posted April 21, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted April 21, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have been running the CS3 beta since it came along at Christmas, but am having a real mare installing the real thing, downloaded last night. Â I suspect (but haven't proven) that it may be due to the ._sif hack that allows Mac users to use the beta for what seems to be an unlimited time. The uninstaller doesn't remove this file, leaving some beta folders etc intact. Â I will report back should I be successful...

Guest guy_mancuso Posted April 21, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted April 21, 2007 Andy we need to post this so everyone can read it . You need to run a scrpt to rid the beta out before installing. Â http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cs3clean.html

Manually removing the file, then uninstalling the beta again is making some progress.  I will make this a sticky for a while.
andybarton Posted April 21, 2007 Author Share #4 Â Posted April 21, 2007 Actually, it's not making progress, just removing the ._sif file. Â I will try the cleaner... Â

andybarton Posted April 21, 2007 Author Share #6 Â Posted April 21, 2007 Life was so simple when all you had to do to install software was drag a folder from the CD to your HD, and all you had to do to uninstall it was drag the folder to the Trash and empty... Â I will let you know how I get on.
andybarton Posted April 21, 2007 Author Share #7  Posted April 21, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Running the script has sorted the problem. Thanks so much Guy - I would have torn what hair I have left out messing around with that today.  I was hoping that the full version would have got rid of the coloured menu items, but no such luck. Anyone else seeing this? Maybe it's in a Pref somewhere. [Edit] It is now a Pref - I'd not noticed it before Welcome, dear visitor! [Edit] It is now a Pref - I'd not noticed it before  I don't have colored menus, and no hack, and my beta lives forever.  If I'm lucky maybe I can make it last the 14 months until the next version comes out  Edmund
Woody Campbell Posted April 21, 2007 Share #9 Â Posted April 21, 2007 It's not the hack. I had a copy of CS3 beta on my mac (little-used and un-hacked). Downloaded the new CS3 and followed the instructions (including the instructions for uninstalling the beta copy). The PS part of CS3 would not install. The error message provided no information at all. Â Running the cleaning script solves the problem, but I'm disappointed with Adobe for not anticipating this issue. Guest guy_mancuso Posted April 21, 2007 Share #10 Â Posted April 21, 2007 What really Adobe should have done when you install CS3 is a option item asking if you have the beta to run the cleaning script . Folks are really going to have a hard time not knowing this first . Actually a friend e-mailed me that he tore his hair out installing CS3 .
gesper Posted April 21, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted April 21, 2007 Do we need to run the script for PC's too, or just Macs?

Jamie Roberts Posted April 22, 2007 Share #15 Â Posted April 22, 2007 On the PC--you just need to ensure that you uninstall the beta completely--that includes fonts and adobe shared stuff (it's only CS 3, it's not CS2). Â I couldn't install CS 3 on Windows unless I completely and totally uninstalled CS3 beta. Afterwards--no problems at all (I also installed to a new location). Â Boy is it worth it, though. I love the new CS3--it feels a thousand times faster than CS2 on my machine.

dhsimmonds Posted April 23, 2007 Share #17 Â Posted April 23, 2007 Does the purchased CS3 have the "Print with Preview" mode? I love the Beta version except that damned if I can make the "Print" mode, which is supposed to replace "Print with Preview" work properly. It always defaults to A4 paper even after setting it up to another size. Â I am left using Beta CS3 for editing my images but going back to CS2 for printing them....not a very nice workflow! The Adobe forum is full of complaints about this bug.
sdai Posted April 23, 2007 Share #18 Â Posted April 23, 2007 What's worth the ticket to upgrade, folks?
Jamie Roberts Posted April 23, 2007 Share #19 Â Posted April 23, 2007 @ David--print seems to work OK for me (Windows XP) Â @ Simone--sheer performance increase is worth the price of admission for me (Windows XP), as is the histogram in the curves palette (and "show clipping" in curves is also equally brilliant). Â There's a ton more, really, especially on the GUI side, that just make this a lot nicer to use, IMO.
